Quake3 performance

    I have a celeron 450 and v2 (probably a typical system give or take a tnt) and q3 runs horrid slow, anyone else annoyed about or have experinced this (this is with all the tweaks)

    I have a Celery 500 and a TNT2u and I only get 40 - 50 FPS in any setting(fastest, fast, Normal .....) I'm at a loss. Maybe its cause we were in INC? smile.gif this is our punishment! Oh well...

    i had some v2 (maxi) driver problems, which i got sorted yesterday (by dl the latest drivers from the guillemot site), got a nice 30% or so fps increase.

    I recommend a few changes to El Pres's config there.

    Com_maxfps shouldnt be as high as 100, do a timedemo by typing 'timedemo 1' in the console, then 'demo demo002'. At the end of the playback have a look at the console to see your fps. Set your com_maxfps to 3-5 frames under the result. Setting it as high as 100 if your comp cannot manage anything near that will result in a lot of chop if theres a lot going on, as yer comp tries to keep up. Also in q3, more fps does NOT give an advantage, unlike in q1 and q2, cos its the snaps command that controls the number of world updates a second, and that cannot be over 40.

    com_hunkmegs should be around 80% of your RAM, turn it up from 20 if you have over 32 Megs of RAM.

    cg_predictitems I would suggest turning to 0, if at 1 its the server that decides if you have picked something up or not, so you may run into something then run off, but the server thinks you havent touched it at all. At 0 the client does this, which is much more accurate, I find.

    btw I'm not dissing your config El-Pres, just a suggestion or two smile.gif

    I gotta disagree with you Chaos, more fps is no advantage in q3. More fps means a semmingly smoother conn at the client end, which is obviously better for the player, but it is Snaps which control updates, not fps. Of course the higher the fps the more it seems like real world movement, but someone with 80 fps has no advantage over 40fps, presuming both have Snaps at 40.

    Fps no advantage??? hahaha, ya rite man. Mouse movement is much harder to judge on a low fps, not to mention the headache you get while playin qw on a low spec pc, starin at 3-10 fps in a big CA game.

    Oh dear God, ok let me put it this way, I am not advocating anyone play with low fps or that low fps is good. I am saying that it IS THE SNAPS COMMAND THAT CONTROLS THE RATE OF WORLD UPDATES and that FPS ONLY HAVE A BEARING ON THE APPARENT SMOOTHNESS OF THE GAME AT YOUR COMP. I am all in favour of high fps, in fact I've tweaked the hole off my q3 in an attempt to gain these hallowed high fps.

    So to conclude, I am not trying to say that 20 fps is the same as 80 fps, I AM SAYING THAT YOU HAVING 80 FPS GIVES NO ADVANTAGE OVER SOMEONE WITH 20 FPS ASSUMING BOTH OF YOU HAVE SNAPS SET AT 40. As i beleive I already stated on several occasions.

    Methinx someone with a smooth 80 fps, whatever the Snaps rate, probably has an advantage over someone playing at 20 fps and struggling to use the mouse properly while getting the sh1te blown out of them by someone jumping round the screen. Try using an RG at 20 fps.

    BTW, what's all the malarky with borgs and redshirts? That got to do wiv clans or something?

    More fps gives doesn't give a connection advantage is what he's saying.

    Besides, has anyone noticed the radical ping jumps in q3a. My pings at 50, I enter an rl fight it's at 80, I enter a fight with 5 eople on a really small level and it's 160, odd. And all the hpbs on the server seemed to jump from 150 - 250 or so abouts.

    What kind of machines are yous getting 80fps constant with q3 anyways. yes I get 140 ping in q3 but when I move it shoots upto 300, wtf am I doing wrong...

    Have to agree with Caster there. The Com_maxFps makes a huge diference to your lag and how smooth your connection is. The higher your fps obviously makes things nicer for the user to play with, but it gives no advantage over a player with 40 fps, (or 40 snaps on the server), ie. that a 40 fps player can see more than the 80 fps player can over the net.

    Donno if im coming accross right here, but belive me, the snaps size from the server makes a huge difference and makes it alot more fairer.

    Haven't really messed around with the config for q3 yet, hell, still using the wheelmouse to change weapons.

    anyways, got myself one of those geforce annihilator pros ddr job there b4 christmas, mmmm shiney metal. Anyways, on a celery500, 64mbs ram (gettin more today), 800x600 and all the fancy graphics stuff on i'm hitting 60 fps which isn't all that great either.

    And as far as ping ? bah, getting the same thing as spoonman, decent enuf when i'm just standing there twidling my thumbs but when my hand gets anywhere in the vacinty of the mouse up it jumps to 250-300.

    Lag is difficult to compensate for in q3 it seems. Q2, u know when you've got a crap conn and u can compensate to great effect but q3 seems to be a lot harder to do this. Probably due to castor's point of that command u set to 40.

    good lad el pres i see u like my config , 1 made some small adjustments since i got the full game from santa

    btw at the time i didnt know anything about connetion tweaks, but i dont give a toss roll on t1

    Well on my p3 450 clocked at 540 and a pci
    banshee i get a constant 90 fps with full
    texture detail and lightmap turned off.
    ( at 640 * 480 of course) with sonics config
    i get a constant 100 fps. of course in a big
    battle with bots or on a lan it drops to
    75-80.
    timedemo 001 89fps
    timedemo 002 92 fps


    BTW, does anyone know how to make q3 playable
    on the net, ie as playable as qw?
