As a natural extension of this forum it would be nice to have a regualr boards.ie poker night - maybe once a month. Since the venue will be the most difficult aspect it might be a good idea for us to become members of the Fitzwilliam club - its free. The only down side is the lack of drink.

On the plus side they do cater for private games, if we had enough people. Otherwise we could mingle with the masses.

    You decide.

Sounds like a good plan, I'd say a Boards only mini-tournament might be better for the community aspect rather than everyone turning up to the Fitzwilliam,
any idea what the private room setup would cost?

I've been emailing these guys about organising a tournament and I'm waiting for them to get back to me.

major problems for organising a boards game for more than 8-10 people is
    1) Venue
    2) Drink
    3) Enough chips for everyone to play.

    I'd be up for either.
Although it would be nice to have a drink, I'm not that bothered. And besides, as alcohol affects the inhibitions, I'm thinking it might be better for my stack to stay somewhat sober!
Hence, my vote for (a private room in) The Fitzwilliam Club (I dare say it would be easier to organise too).

I had been toying with the idea of dropping in there on my own some night, but I'm somewhat reluctant to go swimming with the sharks just yet. And, as I'm not completely au fait with the etiquette involved in playing in places like The Fitzwilliam, it would certainly be better for me to get a few friendly games under the belt.

Anyway, whatever the consensus is, I'm in.

    Hyzepher:
A question regarding membership at The Fitzwilliam; I see from their website that you need to bring along ID (driving licence, passport), no problem there.
However, I would have an issue if they photocopy the ID, is this the case?

I phoned the Fitzwilliam and they cater for private games - however they have a charge. They were unable to say what the charge would be - I have to ring back later for a quote.

They record your photo ID so that when you swipe your membership card the photo comes up on their computer so they can ensure that you are who you say you are - so the answer is yes they do take a copy of the photo ID.

I think they actually take a picture there and then. You can arrive without ID and they will let you join on the proviso you bring photo id next time but they will always take a pic of you there and then.

I'd be interested in a game. I play home games mostly so I wouldn't mind trying out the Fitzwilliam in a slightly less intimidating atmosphere.

I'd be interested too depending on the stakes. I've played reasonably high stakes poker before (which to me is something along the 10-quid-a-bet line), but I'd prefer if we didnt get nuts about this, friendly game and all.

What are the usual stakes like at this place, I've never heard of it before!

Well what I would like to see is a private boards.ie game where we all put in €20 or so and divvy oout the chips - we could then pay for 1st, 2nd & 3rd places. This means that no one is going to go broke or anything. If they go out early they could parttake in one of the house games etc if they wanted. As far as I know the house games (poker) work in more or less the same way.

That sounds like a good plan Hyzepher, do you knwo how much the private rooms in the Fitzwilliam cost? 20euro in sounds about right, no need to make a Boards poker night into a high stakes night, it'd be more for the fun and chat.

That sounds like a plan. Do we need to be in the Fitzwilliam if we are going to play between us? Not having a bar will kinda suck (though my play goes to *sh|t* when I drink!). If its a private room, can we bring hip flasks of whiskey?

Hey! Stop looking at me like that!

OK - eventually talked to someone in Fitzwilliam that knew about their pricing. Basically thay will provide a dealer and chips for the night (anytime between 8:30 & 2am). I assume the dealer can only work 1 table if we have more than 10 bodies going.

Anyway the fee is €300 for the night - so it is a bit expensive. If we can get 20 people going we could charge €35 a head - €15 for the house fee and €20 into the pot. Then the winner would get €250. 2nd €100, 3rd €50.

There is no alcohol but they do provide complimentary soft drinks and snacks. There is also other games going on throughout the club that you could avail of if you get eliminated.

The benefit of the Fitzwilliam is that we get a professional looking game on a regular basis that is for boards.ie only. We also have enough chips to go around etc. Of course the more we get the cheaper it will become but for €35 it seems like a good night out - albeit DRY! Remember you have the chance to pick up €250.

Let me know what you think.

Slight bit of confusion here - have I missed something cos if a dealer can only work one table and it's 10 to a table, what do the other 10 people of the 20 who've paid do?

Good idea though, would definitely be up for this semi-regular.

Sounds like a decent price for a good night of poker with dealer and chips and nice setting, and free snacks.
    Count me in anyway.
I'm guessing if this goes ahead it will be an after Christmas affair?

Well we could get 2 dealers - may have to tip them though. Or the other table could deal themselves - no too difficult. We can organise that aspect on the night.

So the €300 covers more than one table? Grand, just wasn't making sense in my head then.

i'd love to drop down (from cork) if this gets organised, i've never played in a casino type venue, and playing with friendly folks would be far less intimidating

count me in for one of the sessions.

also, with regards to a second dealer (for the other table of 10), a good option may be to look for another boards.ie member to volunteer to act as dealer (or be paid a small sum for his troubles) for this table, or alternatively to get one of the first persons knocked out to become dealer (as long as (s)he doesn't want to avail of the other games on the night

From the sounds of that i'd say it's €300 per table, although I could be wrong. I seriously doubt they will let you have a table without a dealer. They don't have many tables to spare in there so I'm sure it's €300 per table. I think we need this clarified before you can plan it anymore. Anyway I think I'd rather enter Wednesday night's €20 entry for a better chance at winning more money.

Nope - its €300 for the night. They will let us play without a dealer if we want. The guy said that what normally happens is that the winner tips the dealer a few bob.

Fitzwilliam is a nice venue and very professional. 300 for one table is a bit much as you are likely to get only 8 around a table realistically and thats pushing it.

35 a night seems fine to me.

If Boards.ie are really thinking of starting a poker nihgt, you should think about it like this

Fitzwilliams costs €300 a night, for that you could buy enought poker chips to use your self, i got 500 11.5 gram clay chips for 60USD in a nice Aluminium case, with cards and dices, really nice,

And i'm sure we could use someones house for a night, or back garden shed :).. all we need is a bigish table a deck of cards and a light,

Just a thought........... cos paying the fitzwilliam 300 each time is mad,, when one of the players could be pocketing the cash.

I offered the use of my house but people are worried about playing in a strangers house (fair point on reflection). I am looking for a fairly low stake home game if anyone would have me. I have yet to play hold 'em with real cards. I am going to go to the Fitzwillaim club, probably next Thursday, but wouldn't mind a house game first.

I think after a couple of games in the neutral territory that is the Fitzwilliam people would then be more comfortable with going to games in people's houses, seeing as we'd know each other a bit by then. I would be happy having boards folks over to my gaff for a game of poker but only once I knew them.

Plus you'd be able to keep people you didn't like out, ie whoever won your cash the last time.

These are all good points Dapper. Still, wouldn't mind a game IRL before I go to the club and make an ass of myself.

I'd have no issue hosting a game for the people who say they want to play here. Amp and Dotc are my flat mates and would be up for it!

ps: we have crap chips here... can anyone recommend a good set? (real good for <100euro if you can)
