Netopia Cayman + Win98 = PAIN

Ok, maybe its just me...

I've come across this twice in two weeks, 1st on a win98 laptop and then a desktop.
Both on eircom dsl with the Netopia Cayman thing on USB.
Both complained of a "virus" like situation which basically fecked up connecting to the intornet.

When virus/spyware etc. was removed, intornet still not working, soooo I try uninstalling and reinstalling cayman software (eircom cd).
NOTHING, nothing at all. It appears to ping the modem ip, but nothing else can see it or the web.

Has anyone else experienced this???
I'm absolutely desperate... plus its p***ing me off no end
