It would have to be Bob Dylan. He's the reason I started listening to music with lyrics again, I'd been in the electro trancy fold for a few years till I gave him a go.

For fun lyrics though, Jimmy Pop from the Bloodhound Gang

"If I were God I'd get a bunch of slaves to do everything...
Norwegian lesbians that feed me grapes and know how to sing.."

    Al Stewart

    What a wordsmith!
Rainstorm, brainstorm, faces in the maelstrom,
Huddle by the puddles in the shadows where the drains run
Hot dogs, wet clogs clicking up the sidewalk
They're disappearing into the booze shop
Rainbow queues stand down by the news stand, waiting for the late show.
Pin ball sin hall, minds in free fall
Chocolate coloured lady making eyes through the smoke-pall

I can't believe no one has mentioned ben folds yet.
one of the greatest song writers ever, ( thats not an overstatement) if you've heard him, you're a fan, if you haven't then you need to.
saw him two years ago supporting divine comedy in the ambassador. best gig ive ever been to.

    SMOKE

Leaf by leaf, page by page
    Throw this book away
All the sadness, all the rage
    Throw this book away
Rip out the binding, tear the glue
All of the grief we never even knew
    We had it all along
    Now it's smoke

The things we've written in it
    Never really happened
All the things we've written in it
    Never really happened
All of the people come and gone
    Never really lived
All the people come have gone
No one to forgive - smoke

We will never write a new one
There will not be a new one
    Another one, another one

Here's an evening dark with shame
    Throw it on the fire
Here's the time I took the blame
    Throw it on the fire
Here's the view we didn't speak
It seemed for years and years
    Here's a secret
No one will ever know the reasons for the tears
    They are smoke

Where do all the secrets live
    They travel in the air
You can smell them when they burn
    They travel in the air
Those who say the past is not dead
    Stop and smell the smoke
You keep on saying the past is not dead
    Come and smell the smoke
You keep saying the past is not even past
    You keep saying ...
We are smoke ... smoke ... smoke

    .............................................................................

    SELFLESS COLD AND COMPOSED

I said what you wanted to hear
And what I wanted to say
So I will take it back
Are all the dishes in tact
    Let them be broken

    It's easy to be
    Easy and free
    When it doesn't mean anything
    You remain
    Selfless, cold and composed

    You've done me no
Favor to call and be nice
    Telling me I
    Can take anything I like
Your don't owe me to be so polite
    You've done no wrong
    You've done no wrong
    Get out of my sight

    It's easy to be
    Easy and free
    When it doesn't mean anything
    To remain
    Selfless, cold and composed

    Come on baby
Now throw me a right to the chin
Don't just stare like you never cared
    I know you did
    You just smiled
    Like a bank teller
Telling me blankly, have a nice life

    Come on baby
Throw me a right to the chin
    Just one sign
That could show me that you give a ****
    But you just smile politely
    And I grow weaker and I ...

Said what you wanted to hear
And what I wanted to say
So I will take it back

    It's easy to be
    Easy and free
    When it doesn't mean anything
    When it doesn't mean anything
    You can take anything
    So selfless, cold and composed
