Internet Access to get faster for Cork surfers

Internet users in Cork will have speedier access in the new year.
Broadband provider, Irish Broadband, is expanding its service and Cork is the first location outside Dublin to be targeted by the company.
A spokeswoman for the company said true broadband is much faster than broadband and will enable customers to have constant access to the internet — without having to log on with a password
    — from as little as €1.15 a day.

“The speeds we provide are much faster than ordinary broadband,” she said.
The spokeswoman added that while there is already one small
provider of broadband in Cork, there is no widespread true broadband.
“We will be servicing the city and just outside it,” she said.

Irish Broadband will provide their service from an antenna on the R&H Hall building on Centre Park Road. An office will also be opened in Cork in the new year to direct the service in Cork.
“Jobs will be created but it is hard to put a figure on how many,” she said. “When we began in Dublin, we had four staff and now we have 48.”
She said that recruitment will start in January and advertise-
ments will be placed in the local media. “There will be jobs in customer support, sales and marketing,” she said.

The expansion to Cork was facilitated by a decision in July by the Director of Telecommunications to grant licences to Irish Broadband to provide services in Cork, Limerick, Galway, Waterford, Drogheda and Dundalk.
“Irish Broadband is deploying its services firstly in Cork and is planning to roll out its network in the other five cities by mid-2004,” she said.
There are also plans to find other high sites in Cork like R&H Hall’s building to provide a more widespread service in Cork.

A decent attempt to bring broadband to the masses.....
