emm that isnt a low ping, infact tis quite high for broadband, unless you made a mistake with 390 and it should have been 90ms

anyway thats what broadbang is for, lower pings for better gaming

the higher the ping the higher the lag ans connections get interrupted or dropped altogether

    cheers

390ms is the time taken to contact the server and report back to you(ping/response time)

Try selecting the lowest ping server, 390ms sounds a right bit away

sorry, i ment why is it so HIGH ?

Perhpas the server is based in America, or Australia, or somewhere far away.
If you can search for servers close to home your ping would be better. Or at least, should be! :D

390 is really bad ping. You should be getting round 150 to America. The lower the number the better

    What isp are you on?
    Where is the server?
Whats the netcode for the game like? (every game adds to your basic ping as it needs to do some 'stuff')

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,070 ✭✭✭Placebo

    IOL. 512k
    I was using an Emulator.
I think i tried connecting to HonKong, Taiwan and USA and they were basically all 390
i didnt even load the game, you basically go to netplay and it takes you to a chatroom, which shows your current Ping.

    I got better ping on 56k ! (152 ms)

Possibly bad routing to the server?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,070 ✭✭✭Placebo

downloaded devastation, getting 390-290 ms ping. Maybe b/c of usa servers, gonna try get a closer one.

In CS on IOL 512K to jolt.co.uk servers I get about 50ms on average as a ping.

it might just be as practical said just bad routing or something. Anyway when u play CS u should get like 44-55 on most servers(english servers)

Erm, there's no point to play with 300 ping. Once the server recieves your request to fire a gun or such you will have moved about 100 feet infront of the firing position and shoot yourself in the back of the head (well not really but hehe).

If you're gaming, stick to european servers. Playing on an asian server is unthinkable for any reasonable european gamer :)

Same goes for American servers if you're playing first person shooters.
    I don't like ping above 50.

That's what i get the most uk servers but I even wish it was lower. I'm not truly happy with that ping. Then again I used to be on <10ms even back in 98 until 2001.

go to start , then run type in cmd and click ok
    type ping www.jolt.co.uk
that will give you an idea of the pings you will be getting in cs on uk servers

if your on windows xp, not sure if this is on w2k/98 etc

    goto command prompt

    type:
    pathping www.jolt.co.uk

and wait 270secs for it to complete, that should give you a better idea of
ping times and packetloss on each hop.

thanks everyone, i know how to check ping from dos, just wouldnt know what servers to check.

I got wOlfenstine : terror assult or something, joined a Uk server = ping 40ms.
hosted a server and my friend was getting 80ms, i think he was downloading stuff though.

    Thank You

Is there anyway to decrease ping a small bit, I'm on clicksilver which is notourious for high pings, I have a 15 foot telephone cable running between my modem and the phone line, would this affect my ping. By the way pings to jolt.co.uk are about 65-75

dont know bout other games but cs has the option to change the rates at which data is sent and received from the server, ie rate, cl_updaterate, cl_cmdrate etc.

What you did was not a ping but a traceroute try ping jolt.co.uk not pathping.

i'm pinging jolt on 56k and getting about 150ms on average is this typical for 56k or what?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,148 ✭✭✭angelofdeath

im just after trying it on a dsl line and got 360 average:( , bad server and router tho

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,321 ✭✭✭OfflerCrocGod

angel what you posted there was 'timed out' not 360ms, be warned if you are using IOLBB they block ICMP which means they block ping which is why you were getting that 'timed out' stuff. You are on IOLBB I'm right?.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,148 ✭✭✭angelofdeath

no, first one was isdn at work, second one was dsl in a caf

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,483 ✭✭✭Töpher

    Data,

150ms is fine for 56k. Not the best game playing experience ever, but for 56k is good enough.
