Violence and gore sells extremely well in the western markets and, as long as it does, publishers will be selling violent games. What publishers are slowly learning is that racism in games, no matter how faint, will be jumped upon by the moral masses.

As for legislation and law suits in the US, there seems to be new legislation, court cases, law suits etc. every other week. Few of these ever end in success. Violence, gore and racism are much more graphic in other media.

I haven't played Hitman 2 but as far as I remember, they removed a level set inside a mosque or somesuch.

the end level was set in a church? i dont remember much else of the game tbh.

surely they cant remove the last level :p

Didn't "The Getaway" have to change a scene where you dressed up in a BT suit and massacre a load of people?

As long as sales are high there will be no end to violent games. I mean, remember how Mortal Kombat was so appealing. Game companies will probably be a little more cautious, but I don't think its such a big priority (interesting how all those stories against video games all relate to Rockstar). In fact, I believe we will see more violent games than ever given the success of Grand Theft Auto.

Violent games live by age ratings. Age ratings are their friend.

Remember the contraversy over Night Trap and whatever that MD game was (slaughterhouse or something... uber gory... hockeymask murderer kinda hero guy). Hell remember Carmageddon?

Violence in games has always been contraversial and always will be but the fact is it'll always be in games. Not every game but there will always be violent games.

The Hitman debacle will basically become the episode of South Park where they change the town flag - little will be changed except some skin tones. Doesn't matter anyway - that level sucked :D

Rockstar are really just trying to avoid alot of costly legal cases. The Haitian case would never hold up. Anybody who's played the game would know that you were ordered to exterminate a gang called 'The Haitians' and not the actual race.

    Why remove violence in games?
    just enforce the ratings
The Gouranga bonus in GTA was class, very pleasing when you got it because it could be hard when you've got 4 squad cars on your ass and are 15seconds away from a phone that'll stop ringing in 12 and you're driving like the blue blazes to reach it.
That said, I don't have a hatred of Hare krishnas, I'm not going to hop in a car and mow them down tomorrow. Well, at least until I get asked to buy another book.....
Violence sells, because it lets us have a bit of fun trying something we wouldn't normally do in real life.
If some little punk kid grabs dad's rifle and slays his class, that's the parent's fault and the NRA's fault, not the game.
Those sorts of children and people are a little unhinged/socially excluded to begin with.
There is far worse violence in movies and on the news.
An adult mind (I'm talking about a persons mental and social maturity, not age) can enjoy a game like GTA because it's a tongue in cheek represntation of the real-world (hyped up), it's a fantasy world based on real-life in which your actions have consequences in said game-world. An adult mind can distinguish that from reality, they get a thrill, entertainment from it and go off and watch star trek, go to work, bed etc. and that's it.
Why deprive people of a good game because it takes the piss of the real-world?
Kill All Haitians is just funny :) Why remove it? Is there a haitian lobby group who feel opressed by such imagery? Are they drug-dealers? Does the kill-all haitians stage encourage you to literally kill all haitians or the gang members? Again, it's an example of a violent game taken completely out of context and slapped with a big red "Politically incorrect" sticker.
Is The Sun reporting on some human tragedy to sell papers with big cheesey headlines politically incorrect? I feel it's a bit inappropriate. Will it be banned or removed? Not bloody likely. How about the Page3 girls, exploitation of women for profit or cute chicks making a good living off the money of contruction workers?
How does it incite hate any more than running around killing mob-bosses and their cronies?
Fucking Political Correctness is having too much effect on our lives. Who cares if offends some people, if a game came out where I was playing the role of an Islamic fundamentalist group, I'd have no problem (in the game) planning to blow the holy shit out of some western city who's government had bombed my country, nor would I have a problem playing the role of a general sending troops into a village and blowing the shit out of that either, if that was the mission objective, and there were cool explosion effects.
If it's fun, play it - but only if you're not easily confused between real-world and game-world.
If you can't distinguish between slaughtering a room full of henchmen in a game and putting a bullet through your english teacher's head with the .45 Dad keeps keeps loaded above the paintcans in the garage, you should be rounded up with others like you and be aurally raped by a flock of randy syphilis-infested pidgeons.

    "<DeVore> frogger leads to jaywalking"

I just noticed this in your sig.

    Roffle.

This is the sort of ridiculous thinking that leads to Rockstar having to remove harmless parts of their games.

Funny how Doom, GTA et al are blamed for all these fucked up american kids blowing away their classmates etc. I've played all these violent games. Probably for far longer than any of these psychopathic youths, alone for hours in the dark of my bedroom. I've never shot anyone, nor would I have any uncontrollable desire to go on a killing spree, even if I had access to weaponry.

    People need to wake up.

Hell, they even blame Marylin Manson for half of this crazy bizness.

I've played several games where some scenes are set inside a church.
People need to wake up and realise that just because they're in a minority, people "aren't out to get them".

    from the news report:
" "This is disgraceful, because people may think that terrorists wear turbans but they don't," he said. "

    Ha... [no comment]
Yeah, like they try to "fit in with the crowd" by wearing turbans...

Watch Bowling for Columbine and you'll understand why america uses games as a escape goat for their social problems.

You'll see a big difference in the news over in the america aswell. Most of it is fear-mongerling (sp?) and not facts.

Watch that film anyway, its done very well!!

You wouldn't believe the trouble i got into in my childhood for running really fast around loops, jumping on evil robots and picking up lots of golden rings......i don't know maybe games do have an effect on children :)

They made a new word for graphic violence in games. 'Killographic' (seriously)

Pornographic is the name for a film with porno in it so Killographic is the name for a game with.. killing in it I suppose.

    How ghey.

    Agreed.

Video games, just like other types of media, are harmless as long as they are in the right hands, or even minds.

Child-like minds should not be subject to realistic, or relatively realistic, violence.

I believe the content they removed from Hitman 2 was the turbans worn by the assassins in the market level. It was deemed racist so they had to get rid of them. I think it's pathetic removing the slightest racially aggressive feature in a game when you get it in films all the time and it's never a case of the whole point of the game being directly against a certain racial group. So I think it's one of those things that will blow away with time like the hating of porn or violent films now everyone LOVES them :p

    heh,
reminds me of the Patch released for Soldier of Fortune.
Amongst the updates it fixed a "bug" in the game.
When you travelled to aarab areas, civillian aarabs would trigger the crosshair to turn red [colour designated as enemy]. Patch fixed this so would remain green for civillians ... too many protests apparently heh

Thing is, you'd still shoot the legs off the civilians (in any level) because they got in the fucking line of sight and you missed your shot.

I was pretty annoyed at Generals.
Always played as the Arabs. Far more fun :)

with more and more cases like this I think they will start to become more politically correct in order to maximise sales by not distancing a minority.

I don't think games sales have or will be affected by any of these cases. The majority of people who make these complaints probably never played a game before or intend to.

I have no idea. The difference in game type may have something to do with it tho considering with Generals you have little dudes seen from above in an rts but in hitman it's pretty up close n personal cuz you've a big arab muddafukka chasin you round with a fcukin machine gun so I THINK there's a slight difference . But who know's I'm not the censor! Also theres some truth to whats in generals tho I'm just trying to think of a reason. I'm sure there is one. The hitman thing is just a bit on the speculative side suggesting all turban wearers are trained assassins with Mp5-sd's hidden under their hats.

WHy do people always have to blame other things for kids doing crazy things. Maybe the kid's just crazy!! You can't just say "Oh its his parents fault" or "videogames" or "music" or "society". Some people are just crazy!

My view on this sort of rubbish was cemented when Mechwarrior2 was fingered for lawsuits a few years back.
You control 100m tall amoured battle suit.
You aim with the mouse while managing a plethora of systems to keep yourself funtional in a battle.

How the flying wombat chicken head melon of christ does that teach kids to pick up daddy's 12-guage and plug Sue-Ellen full of buckshot because she drank your chocolate milk?

I say cut the problem off at the source.
    Ban FOX News.
