Warning over NI car tax fines
    15/12/2003 - 4:22:07 pm

Innocent motorists should not be penalised as the British government moves to recover £13m (€18.5m) a year in unpaid car tax in Northern Ireland, it was claimed today.

Drivers who fail to pay up in time will face an immediate £80 (€114) fine from January 1.

The British government's Department of Vehicle Licensing is announcing the new laws in an attempt to wipe out the unpaid vehicle tax.

But motoring organisations urged the authorities not to go after drivers who are simply late with payment.

Elaine Fee of the Automobile Association said: “We think this is a good idea. There are thousands of people who don’t pay tax, as well as lots of law-abiding motorists. But this system should not be used to victimise those who are a bit late in paying.

“It should only target those who never pay their tax.”

One in 10 motorists in Northern Ireland evade car tax.
