You can set a password to a word document or any other microsoft office document. You can usually set that when you're saving the file and checking the 'OPTIONS' that appear in the save dialog box... There is an option in there for PASSWORD TO OPEN and PASSWORD TO MODIFY. Use the first one and it will request the password every time you open the file. Don't tick the 'read only' option or it will let people open the file as read only.

To password protect non microsoft office files in xp though you might need a third party program that can encrypt files.

Of course if XP is using the ntfs file format instead of fat32 then you can set permissions on files so that other users cannot access them. (They'd need to be setup as different users though)

You can password protect the word file from within word : Tools => Options => Security

Be careful if the infomation is important, It can be crack in a matter of seconds with the right tool, same with Access, Excell password protection.........

Personally I would encrypt the data, doing a google will give you some encryption tools......!

    Thanks joePC
