BPI to probe Amazon CD imports

Amazon.com is being investigated by the music industry over possible illegal importing of CDs into Britain.

The world's biggest online retailer must prove that it did not breach copyright law or practice what is termed ‘parallel importing’, when selling CDs to UK consumers.

Its sister company, amazon.co.uk, has already satisfied the record industry trade body BPI that it does not import CDs illegally.

The news comes as the BPI prepares to fight its most high-profile illegal importing case against CD Wow, a Hong Kong-based retailer.

The case will be heard in the British High Court, London, next month.

CD Wow has been one of the internet's success stories with an estimated £100m (€143m) turnover last year.

The BPI has also issued legal proceedings against play.com, another online CD retailer, based in Jersey.

    This is odd.

amazon.co.uk (who actually do import CDs to sell to customers) have satisfied BPI that they don't import CDs illegally (when they certainly at least import them - they even mark the product with "IMPORT" when the shopper is browsing).

amazon.com (who don't import CDs at all - they sell directly from the US to customers in other countries who effectively do the importing themselves) are the ones being sued.

Amazon.co.uk must source their imports through the UK record companies. The BPI and their Irish shyster counterparts have no objection to the selling of imports, as long as they get their cut.
