It's up to your taste. I don't mind his voice. At least it isn't an annoying drawl like those southern rappers have.

Nas is a far better lyricist. Jay-Z is more marketable though. Being friends with the Neptunes doesn't hurt either.
Nas has churned out a lot, and I mean a lot, of shite. Bar Illmatic he's done nothing special. All that QB stuff was crap. Oochie Wally anyone?

Not really in fairness. But he is quite poppy when it comes to his songs. His attempts at more hardcore songs are really just him trying to emulate Biggie.

I dunno, it's down to production, and when you work most of the time with the Neptunes, who of course work with everyone else, it all starts to seem the same after a while. As for keeping up with fads, I don't really think so.

He has actually ghost written a lot of songs. Songs you probably love. Who Am I? (What's My Name?) is one song he wrote. I'm not saying you like that song.

The other big rap lables are Def Jam and Shady/Aftermath. Now they're hardly doing poorly are they?
Of course Shady/Aftermath are a subsidury of Interscope and Def Jam are a subsidury of Island. Then there is Arista and Sony who aren't exactly going broke.
Please don't even mention Death Row, and if you think Bad Boy should be doing better well then you should be shot.

Jays voice doesnt annoy me,what annoys me more is that he likes to rap so fast that many fans somehow think there are some superb lyrics in there,but if you seriously listen to it or read the lyrics you will see that a huge amount make absoloutely no sense.
I agree,Nas outdone him in their feud lyrically. I thoughts Jays insults were pretty weak tbh,and I think the general consensus was that Nas won. I think Nas is still pretty decent and has made some brilliant post illmatic stuff.
Agree with the Me and My Girlfriend cover. Crap lyrics and,even worse,he is covering the title and chorus of a song by an artist who didnt even like him when he was alive. FFS he even covered the track from an album which disses him in the intro(presumably Jay has never heard the intro line where he is described as a "corny soundin motherfcuker"). Dont think there was anything wrong with getting beyonce on it though,although Id like to see her do the same lines as Tupacs slightly tougher female vocalist on the song for a laugh:D
Ill be honest-I dont have a Jay Z album,Ive just heard bits of them from friends who have plus the singles,but thats because Im not prepared to buy one because of the quality of sngles he releases. Id just feel I was wasting my money.

Anyway,apart from Jay Ja Rule is utter arse. I got into rap properly maybe 3 years ago now,which afaik was when he started doing his love raps. Look,every rapper can be alloted one or two of them. Method Man did that fairly decent one with mary j blige recently for example. Im not totally opposed to it,but when you build your entire career on them it gets tiresome,particularly when you keep up your gangster ranting in interviews.
The Neptunes are brilliant pop music producers,no doubt about it. Along with Timbaland they made Justin Timberlake what he is today. When he left his group he was another boyband gimp who noone over 13 gave a sh1te about. Nowadays Eminem and 50 Cent go out of their way to shake his hand at the MTV awards. Theyve made him what Michael Jackson was-pop that you dont necessarily have to despise. But when it comes to rap production I think they are severely overrated. I can count on one hand the amount of rap beats theyve done that I thought were brilliant(excluding the clipse album Lord Willin,most of it was good beatwise). Just dont think their sound fits rap properly.
But the worst of them all is..........

Camron and Juelz Santana. I will never forgive them for the utter **** that was Hey Ma and Oh Boy. Complete and utter cock polishing bollocks. Id rather hear Ja Rule sing Mesmerise 25 times than that. I mean,Hey Ma sounds like a 5 year old attempting a freestyle. Read the lyrics and see how awful they are. Its scandalous.

I have to say that the only rapper I truly despise is JaRule, but then he's not really a rapper!!

Too much pop in his repertoire for him to be taken seriously as a gangster rapper or a rapper of any sort.

What's more annoying is the fact that he tries to sound like everyone else [most notably Tupac & DMX]!!

The Source's rating system is crap tbh.
When they gave The Blueprint 5 mics and then gave Stillmatic 5 so they could have a balance it all just went out the window. Neither of those albums deserved 5 mics.
Then Scarface got 5 too and I stopped looking at the magazine. God knows how many more they've dished out at this stage.
I'd say it's very possible to just buy 5 mics off them now.
