cutom built hdd tv recorder

I was thinking of building my own hdd tv recorder with something like a mini-itx comp. Is it something worth doing ? What hardware would i need - tv card being the most important and the hardware i know least about. Can vhs or dvd quality playback be obtained for cheaper than getting sky+ or buying a commercial version ?

theres an open source project that seem to make good software for this type of operation. cant think of its name tho
