I have a Hewlett Packard Jornada PDA, but it doesn't have Bluetooth or WiFi capability.

Is it possible to install Bluetooth or WiFi onto it? And if so, is it expensive?

    Thanks in advance.

Depends on the expansion capabilities of your device - if it has a compact flash port then more than likely it'll support a WiFi/Bluetooth Compact Flash expansion card - if it has an SD card port that suports SDIO then you can get SD WiFi or BlueTooth expansion cards, though these are a tad pricey still - the Compact Flash ones have been on the go for a while so are cheaper.

    Check out Expansys.co.uk

Let us know whick model of Journada you have and we can figure out what exactly your device will support.

    Wow cool.

It's a Jornada 540 series, a few years old though.

Ok - your device supports Compact Flash cards - which means you can use a compact flash Bluetooth or WiFi card - depends which you want really... You can also get Ethernet cards, (wired) modems, barcode scanners etc, etc....

You can buy these in places like PC World... but you'll usually save a lot of money by buying from http://www.expansys.ie or similar. The only advantage with buying from PC World et al, is that if for whatever reason the card you buy doesn't work in your device, you can quite easily return it.

Personally I'd recommend you find what you're looking for on expansys, and ask them if your device will support it via email before you buy - anytime I've had a query they've responded quickly, and reliably.

If you take a look at this page:

    http://www.expansys.ie/d_wireless.asp

    You'll see 'Wireless CF cards'

    and here:

    http://www.expansys.ie/d_bluetooth.asp

You'll see a number of entries along the lines of 'Socket CF Bluetooth, or CF Bluetooth card, or similar...

Prices seem to range from €60 ~ €160, depends what you want and what'll work in your device really.

Might be worth considering a CF card that has both WiFi or Bluetooth (depending on what you want) AND memory space too - you'll pay more, but it means you're not making a trade off....

BTW, you can get the manual for your device here:

just some things to bear in mind...

be careful about drivers - the 540 runs Pocket PC 2000 - so check the manufacturer's support site to ensure they have 2000 drivers... (Pocket PC 2000 is already two version ago...)

might also want to check the www.expansys.com UK site vs. the www.expansys.ie Ireland site - some price comparisons can make it cheaper to order from the UK site...

no combined Wifi + Bluetooth CF cards released (as yet) - so you'll have to make your choice between the two

you might also want to consider battery life - i'm assuming the 540 would have been in use for a good while - peripherial cards are an extra drain on battery life (particulalry WiFi) and if your Li-Ion battery is heading towards the end of it's charge/discharge limit you might not get great performance... all depends on how healthy the battery is though...
