Had been using the internet for making phone calls from about 6 years ago. The quality was always very poor. Now there is a service with a difference

From the creators of KaZaA in Estonia
    Without any spyware or adware
    Completely free
    Not affected by firewalls
It works as long as you have broadband

Tested it tonight for about 2 hours - abfab :D

    Here it is :D

The two fingers to eircom :ninja:

Not quite "phone" calls, since you can't call a landline/mobile phone using skype, you can just talk to other users already connected to the internet.

... or MSN Messenger, or ICQ with the correct plugins.. or teamspeak ... and I'm sure there are more :)

The Skype service where you call a landline won't be free, and www.net2phone.com already does this.
Here's the current pricelist for net2phone (from ireland).

    Us $ 0.050
    United Kingdom $ 0.049
    Buenos Aires $ 0.079
    Sydney $ 0.039
    Canada $ 0.049
    France $ 0.049
    India $ 0.470
    Tel Aviv $ 0.079
    Italy $ 0.059
    Korea South $ 0.079
    Malaysia $ 0.090
    Philippines $ 0.190
    Portugal $ 0.100
    Saudi Arabia $ 0.450
    Spain $ 0.059
    Ukraine $ 0.220

There's nothing new here, skype just got some media attention because one of the developers is one of the original KaZaA developers.

It says on thier site that anything from 36.6K dialup upwards will do..

PC only, bah. But I was trying out iChat video to Japan, and it's fine - iChat is a Mac thing, but I *think* it's interoperable with AOL Messenger, though I'm not certain.

    i use go2call.co.uk
    or go2call.com
You can sign up on either i think.
Very very cheap to landlines all over the world.
Theres about a tenth of a second delay but you dont notice after a minute or so.

Afraid that won't do. Up and Download are both 5-7 KB/s, so minimum that would work is dual (128Kbps) ISDN

For the people that compare this to net2phone ( which I have used from many years ago) and other programs like netmeeting, etc:

The voice quality is much BETTER than an eircom call!!!

Please try this before making any comments ;)

anyone know of a way to recieve calls from a normal phone via one of these things ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 651 ✭✭✭sirlinux

Yep there is free world dialup (www.freeworlddialup.com) lets you get an incoming number in the uk or us that will ring your SIP phone, free world dialup is the best of all the community VOIP projects, skype is a bit of an upstart.

I'm using it on 64k isdn. it's not the worst. Sometimes it can get a little laggy, others it just ****s up. And when using it I can't browse the net. If I was to try I'd never hear a word

    https://vipnetphone.com

Dublin based crowd with PSTN Gateway...No incoming calls yet but can call Landlines and Mobiles...

Call rates are OK...but no Eircom line rental and you can receive on your mobile..

I am going to give it a try and will keep everyone posted.

I take it your broadband connection is not with an Eircon phonline or you'ld have to pay line rental :)
