It would depend on how bad the drive is
If the motor is gone big job (allot of €€€'s)
It there is a little bit of corruption it may be possible to put it into an other computer and copy the info off it (I could do that for the price of a couple of drinks)

I phoned a few places in Dublin when something similar happened to me. It's big bucks. One company was charging €300 just to look at the drive to see if they'd be able to do anything with it. To actually recover the data would have cost a lot more...

as far as I know the maxtor diagnotics utility is reporting the drive as ****3D.
    Sounds like alot of yoyo's.

    yup its very expensive.

usually its only a solution for large companies with extremely sensitive information. Recovery suites are costly and the specialists make a lot of money from employees who accidently press the wrong button.

the cost of backing up: cheap
    the cost of recovery: expensive

    i learned my lesson.

The fact that the maxtor util will run is a good sign
If a drive is not 100% it will fail the test but the chances are 90 - 95 % of the disk is perfect

Well ask the right people. Don't be so damn lazy - get off your ass and find some companys in Dublin, phoned them up and ask them how much they charge.

Just do a Google on data recovery ireland.
You're looking at min 1K sterling plus for the uk outfits, don't know about Ireland.

generally over a thousand, but if you'd looked for the other thread like i suggested you'd know a lot more, and most likely have the names of some people to call too.

Funny that, I have the exact problem at the moment; a dead HD. First, I search goldenpages.ie with the search term "recovery". Got three results. One number in cork, one that didn't exist.

Now, I contacted the other; "Computers Unlimited" (90 Phibsboro rd, 7 (01) 8306495 ) And for just looking at the hard drive and seeing if it can be recovered using software solutions, it will cost me €45. If they have to start replacing parts of the HD to continue the recovery process, it will initially cost €200 approx depending on the part they need. After that, it's a sliding scale upwards of how much it will cost.

Now needless to say, they will say that there's no way they can guarantee recovering anything, but they'll try their best, and it's up to you on howmuch you spend on the recovery.
