i would like to be able to call my phone and make a data call to it. I have an in-vehicle GPS unit which I am supposed to be able to reprogram by means of a data call to phone.

However, when I call the phone with my modem, the phone doesn't recognise the call as a data call, and so ignores it. It appears that some special 'flag' has to be marked, so the phone knows what kind of call it is and so it can treat it appropriately.

I understand that some networks give out a special number for incoming datacalls. Do our two operators do this in Ireland?

    Antoin.

It think you'll have to get yourself provisioned with a data terminating number. This can be either your own number or another one.
