Don't want to ask too many stupid newbie questions at the casino tonight, so here is one that has come up at home games I've played in.

If I call a player's bet after the river and they turn over a hand which beats mine am I oblidged to turn over my cards aswell or can I just muck them at that point?

Not obliged - you can muck. Only exception is where you go all in and have to show before the final cards are dealt - provided ther is no one else betting.

The Fitzwilliam is fairly laid back, there's no smoking at the satellite tables (unlike the cash games), no outright out-loud swearing as you'd expect although you often hear people swearing under their breath when they get beaten when they're all in and similar.

Just be a bit careful of the line that goes around the table surface. If you push your cards over this (towards the dealer) then they are considered muck. Also (as I did my first time raising) when you bet/raise don't do a "string bet" when you drop your chips one by one into the middle, ie if you're counting them out. You have to put them all in in one go, or else state out loud your bet and then chuck the chips in.

Also when a hand is being played don't comment on the flop, "Oooh look at all those hearts, chance of a flush here!"
Its very amateur thing to do and I've seen dealers ask players not to do it on a couple of occasions.

[edit] and feel free to ask either the other players or the dealers any question you're not sure of, they're all happy to explain[/edit]

Easiest thing to do is state "raise" then put your chips in. I don't remember any problem with talking about the flop. Normally in a friendly game it's not a major problem. I was in the tourney last night and my table was pretty lively with lots of comedy oohs and ahhs. Always depends on the mood at the table and the dealer.
There is a problem if you talk about what you folded. i.e. "Jaysus woulda made the flush!". You can tell everyone what you folded once the hand is finished if you really want them to know you're an idiot :)

I know that its happened at least twice when the dealer has asked player to not talk about the cards on the table until the hand is over. If someone says, "look at all the hearts, anyone with hearts here has a good chance of the flush" or something along those lines, it can give the players still in the hand advice or make them concentrate on something they might have missed or not been paying full attention to.

It doesn't really matter at a friendly game, and the comedy oohs and ahhs are fine if nobody directly comments on the flop or what could come up on the table. Best to go by what the dealer says anyway
