Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Legendry No.9 shirt - Are you having a laugh.

    Who made that shirt legendry?

I'm not a Utd. fan but was Andy Cole not the first to score 20 goals in season since Denis Law.

If you want some legendry shirts try No. 10 Brazil and No.7 Liverpool.

Brian McClair wore the number 9 jersey and he done pretty damn well when he came to Old Trafford.

he was a loyal servant with a great engine, in other words, an average player who tried his hardest the whole time.

Number 7 might be special at Liverpoll but look at the muppets that have worn the number 8 shirt.

Paul Stewart, Stan Collymore, Oyvind Leonhardsen, Emile Heskey

The Number 14 must have been large

Jan Molby, Neil Ruddock, Vegard Heggem

Neither, creating a jersey just for him would be a marketing stunt. Assigning him an available number is not.

The best thing about Choccy was his monthly diary in the United magazine. God married footballers must lead boring lives when they're not training and playing (which only takes up a small amount of time during they're day). The poor bloke seemed to spend his life driving his kids and wife around and tinkering with his PC.

From reading it you can see why some of them turn to the drink or gambling.

Number 1 on the Liverpool squad in recent years looks pretty dodgy....

Bruce Grobbelaar, David James, Sander Westerveld, Jerzy Dudek

If im not mistaken Bobby Charlton wore the number 9 shirt and he is a legend

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,580 ✭✭✭uberwolf

to make it a legendary shirt it has to have been filled by a succession of legends. This is not true, at least in recent years, of man yoo's number 9 shirt

It would only be a marketing sceme if he had a two digit number for instance 17.Cause his name is short and they wont make much off that

on that logic - you can't really say the Liverpool No 7 is legendary so.

Nigel Clough, Steve McManaman, Vladimir Smicer, Harry Kewell

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,580 ✭✭✭uberwolf

In fairness we won't judge kewell in it quite yet. But those sequence of players coincide with a huge drought in LFC's trophy cabinet. For man yoo to have their most succesful period and not had alegend fill that shirt is different

ah here boys, there were a few top class players who wore that number 9 shirt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,580 ✭✭✭uberwolf

top class are ten a penny, legendary is a different status. Best, Charlton, Scmeichel, Keane, Cantona off the top of my head, they are/were legends. Cole wasn't. I can't even remember the others.

what I was getting at was in recent years. Law certainly was. but he had to leave them.

But you named Best and Charlton so you've got to put Law down there too. Although I know some United fans don't like him because he scored 'that goal' for City.

I simply didn't remember him, I'm not a yoo fan, so I love hime for that goal :D.
The whole thing i was trying to get at is that the number 9 shirt is not a legendary shirt for Man Utd. sure some good players have filled it, but the number 7 shirt has far more resonance for them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,456 ✭✭✭kida

True, the number 7 has Robson,Cantona,Beckham, Coppell And Best.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 148 ✭✭DEG viper

Nigel Clough, Steve McManaman, Vladimir Smicer, Harry Kewell

how do these 4 make that shirt a legendary shirt
Smicer is useless and Mcmanaman cant even get into the English team
Harry Kewell has nt even been performing well for the pool yet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,580 ✭✭✭uberwolf

even if kewell had been playing well 3 months is too little time to judge the shirt/player. It has already been conceded that those players haven't justified teh shirt, and reasons are given.

Remember most Liverpoll fans only have a pre 1990 memory and can't remember any thing since ;)

United are in the top 3 richest clubs in the world, do you think they would really pay a possible (depending on appearences) £3.5mil for a player just to sell shirts? Do you even think Ferguson would play him if he didn't think he was good enough for the squad, this is not bloody Dream Team.

If United thought about shirt sales so much they wouldn't have sold the biggest marketing tool in the world, David Beckham.

were inflationary measures accounted for in that conversion? was it squeezed in in a briefcase? how did they do that? fascinating stuff. why was that much money squeezed into a football match in the first place? was that the promotion kitty? do you think that much could be squeezed into a match these days considering modern day policing?

Saha will make the no.9 legendary! (Even though McClair has already done it.)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,549 ✭✭✭The Brigadier

This was in the dark days of the 70s...

We squeezed in 57000 euros by checking passports on the way in and flat refusing any darkies, chinkies or anyone that our acting charmen Mr Rigsby deemed unsuitable.....:ninja:
