Boards pool tournament?

Seeing as the pre-xmas tournament didn't work out, how many people would be interested in another tournament?

I play a fair bit in Fireworks, where the tables are a good bit better than the Palace (IMO). Its possible to book the table there afaik with a bit of notice.

I'll be there tonight and I'll ask them what the story is.
They have only 4 pool tables there and most evenings they're all full. The quiet nights are usually Monday and Tuesday so the tournament would be one of those days. Seeing as the tournament would only have 2 tables we'd probably have to limit the number of entrants to 10-16.

Rules would be as before (see the sticky).
Dunno about entrance fee, tables cost 12 euro per hour, although they might do us a special rate if we take the tables for the whole night.

So post here if you're interested and usually available to be in city centre by 5.30pm most mondays and tuesdays or if you've any comments.

I'm interested, but why hold it so early? Most people wouldn't be finished work at 5.30pm any day.

Hmm The Palace for the same money would be better imo, guaranteed at least two tables up till 7pm most nights... even better would be Dr Quirkeys (easier to book, cheaper and no american pool tables), although that would mean sacrificing beer :)

Down with that kind of thing :)

Yeah I'm kind of suiting myself with that :) I suppose a 6.30pm or 7pm start would be a bit kinder to most people

Fireworks if you book the tables you'd be guaranteed them too. I personally prefer Fireworks by a mile, couldn't play very well on the Palace ones.
If anyone wants to fire away and organise something in Palace or elsewhere, fire away, this is merely an interest check at the moment!

    I'm up for this too...
Never been to Fireworks but that will be rectified soon I hope!

I too would be interested (7pm or aftrer)! Where are the tables in Fireworks?

    /Separate rant
€12 an hour?? The tables are obviously made of gold then, yes? :) I play snooker (four times the size) for €4 an hour (although it's in the middle of nowhere so that might explain it!). Beer is nice

The tables in Fireworks are on the ground floor, the 4 tables pretty much take up all the space there since the moved the main bar from the centre of the floor to the side.

The Palace is also 12euro per hour, I'm guessing it the price of playin g in the city centre on nice tables with beer available.

Next time I'm in Fireworks I'll ask what the story is about hiring the some tables for an evening, see if they can give us a good rate for bringing in beer-hungry Boardsters on a quiet monday or tuesday.

so wot's the craic with this tourney then.

I'm still gonna organise the snooker one but I wanna see how the pool one is pulled off first (seeing as how snooker takes longer and all)

I'm going to be in Fireworks tonight so I'll find out what the story is with booking tables for an evening.
I was trying to figure out the best way to organise it. Depending of course on the amount of interest, so once I found out the cost, I'll post in Boards Events where it'll get more views, see what the response is like and go from there.

If we book 2 tables from say 7pm on a monday or tuesday, we'd have them for about 4 hours until closing/last buses.
Say we got 16 people, 8 people per table, 4 pairs of people for the first round.
1st: allow up to half an hour per pair for first round games, finished by 9 ish.
2nd: 2 pairs per table, allow half an hour again per pair, finished by 10 or so.
Semis: 1 pair on each table, best of 3 again, finished by 10.30
Final: 1 table, best of five, play til finished.

I'm sure that each match shouldn't take more than 30 minutes to play 3 frames, so it could easily be wrapped up earlier and let everyone play for fun until 11pm.
Kind of tricky to make sure everyone gets a fair chance at the tables in the first round but still being able to finish the tournament in time.

Fire away with suggestions if you have any.

I was in Fireworks and I asked the girl behind the bar about renting the tables.
Apparently Pioneer have all the tables booked every Monday and Tuesday for their own private league for the next few weeks, so we'll have to wait til March most likely before we can have our tournament.

The good news is that if we book two tables from 7pm til 11pm on a monday or tuesday and get 12-16 people in for the tournament then we get one of the tables free. There's also a chance of some kind of drinks promotion if the whole place is fairly busy, she said it would depend on how much beer we get through. The promotion would most likely be something along the lines of €3 per pint.

So I'll keep ye all updated if I find out any more.

I think Fireworks is unavailable on mondays/tuesdays (the only night they are willing to rent 2+ tables exclusiely to one company/group) for the next 3-4 weeks. I'll find out though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,806 ✭✭✭Lafortezza

If you organise it they will come...
Give it a couple of weeks, the bargirl in there likes me so she'll sort us out when the tables are free :ninja:

Ranelagh would be a good option!! They have a good few tables, with 3/4 length snooker table if there are a lot of people interested!

Another plus is the fact that Russells [pub] is about 3 steps away :D

Good pool tables? I think either Fireworks or The Palace will be the venue for Boards pool competitions, nice and central and both serve pints. Any idea of a price for that place in Ranelagh?

I normally play snooker when I'm in there & it usually costs €7.50 p/h for the full size tables!!

As far as I know, the pool tables are well looked after!! :Dunno:

We could always rent Ken's room ... I think it's somethong like €25.00 per hour :D

    Christ NO!!!!

    We're not that desperate. :D

The tables in there are rubbish.

Well I was in talking to the bargirl who wants to jump my bones there earlier this week. Apparently the crowd who currently have the tables booked Mondays+Tuesdays are finishing up soon.
I asked about hiring tables for Boards but she said that they were thinking of starting their own Fireworks league.
So we can either gatecrash that or we can try to convince them to hire us out tables one evening in the next few weeks.

Hey Lone gunman, f**k you, I'm from Tallaght. There's nothing wrong with Tallaght. The same as every area, there are a few places you shouldn't go. Anyway, alot of cars and stuff that are left in Tallaght come from people who live in Firhouse and surrounding areas. Never insult my hometown again, or there will be hell to pay and your ass will be the currency.

I'm sure it was only a joke by LoneGunM@n, I don't think there's any need to take it so serious.

BTW I'm come from Tallaght myself. :)

I have myself and a former snooker pro as a ringer if we go ahead in the business league, that is unless we put in our own team of 3 ex-pros. Nice guys to have hanging around lol
