Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Take 2.

    25 x (5-1) x 9 = 900 + (7 x 3) = 921

This took a while - such an evil number!

    25 + 8 + 4 = 37

    37 x ( 9 x 2) = 666

There's at least another way to do this on as well,
but I've lost it in my scribblings.

    New set:

    2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 25

    [879]

    8 - 3 = 5
    9 - 2 = 7
    7 * 5 = 35 * 25 = 875 + 4 = 879

Hallo. Back for this one -

    75*(6+3)=675
    675+((7*5)+1)=711

One away... (Starting to think this one may not be possible)

    25 * 4 - (8 * 2) = 84 * 10 = 840 + 6 = 846

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,560 ✭✭✭Boro

    It definitely is possible

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,416 ✭✭✭doh.ie

I'm pretty close to giving up on this one -
    I can get 844, 846, 840...

    But nothing on 845.

Someone I showed it to suggested it wasn't possible due to the lack of a 5
at the end of most scenarios...

Care to PM me a hint?

    ((100 * 9) - (10 + 4))/2 = 443/1 (to use up all the numbers!)

Congrats on the previous one - was doing that for an absolute age and

Bad doh.ie! You posted your answer while I waited for boards to respond. Oh well here's my version of the solution:

    (100-9)=91*(4+1)=455-(10+2)=443. Nice set of numbers.

    As to doh.ie's
    2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 75. Target: 555
    Pretty easy --> 7*75=525
    525+((4*8)-2)=555.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 17,994 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

OK here's some numbers for you lot -->

    1, 2, 5, 7, 9, 75

    Target: 911.

    75 x (5+7) + 9 + 2 = 911

Sorry for your lagged post. You snooze, you lose!

Will get a new one in a sec when I think of a suitably large
    prime number...!

    5+7=12
    12*75=900
    900+2+9=911

As for the previous one, for some reason I spotted it very quickly, I think it's that sort of solution though, once I thought of taking away the 25 it was really obvious.

    Anyway:

    1,8,9,3,4,25
    673

    Worked out quite neat!

Meh. Think I floated the target a bit too close to a 75!

As for yours... NOOOO! Evil, evil puzzle.

Not only is my 30 seconds of 'Countdown'-allotted time up,
but also my 'Er, I need to do this web thing now' work day has ended.

    I don't have any more time - but I got 910.
Will have a go again over the weekend if no one's cracked it.

    aha!

Missed out on a day of fun by the looks of things - wasnt such a quiet day at work as yesterday!

Congratulations Bandraoi on getting the puzzle that had doh.ie squirming :D

    anyway :

    6 + 7 = 13
    9 * 8 = 72
    13 * 72 = 936 - 25 = 911

    nyom :)

I could not be more angry at missing out on Boro's AND the evil of 911. Thought both were impossible. Must stop saying that.

    Anyway...

    (((10+2)*7)-1)*9=747

    Coo. And 50 left over.

    Nightmare, Boro.

    Spent ages today on it.

Will not make my usual mistake of saying it's impossible, but you can reassure
me that you found a way to do it...! Or is there something obvious I'm not seeing
    (again!)

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 17,994 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

Nah it's a nightmare doh.ie! I can't see the damned thing either! But we can't give up... never...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,560 ✭✭✭Boro

Ok a clue - subtracting 10 from the (accumulated) number is the last operation
    so thats 2 5 7 8 75 to get 964

    Hope this narrows it down!

Got annoyed watching all my other ones being solved really easily so i spent a good hour thinking up a right ***** of one the other day :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,416 ✭✭✭doh.ie

I can hardly contain my frustration over this one...! Nightmare. Large portions of my life I will never get back now...

I can get 952, 953, 955 and 956 - some several different ways. But 954 (or 964 without the 10) is continuing to elude me... even with your hint.

This is the most difficult of these I have ever seen. Will come back to it when my head doesn't hurt so much!

Taking pity on you :D - the second last operation is to multiply by 2 (the last operation was to subtract 10).

I told ya twas a hard one!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,416 ✭✭✭doh.ie

You have positively ruined my life. Can't believe I didn't see it before.
I should tell you, I tried all the variations on multiplying (AND dividing!) by 2
and did not see this anywhere among them. 70x7?!!? Gah!

    *deep sigh*

    ((((75-5)*7)-8)*2)-10 = 9 flippin' 54.

I hated this more than any puzzle I've ever done.

Now, give me the guts of a week to find something just as bloody annoying!

Still working on nightmare puzzle, but in the meantime...

    1, 2, 3, 4, 10, 25

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,560 ✭✭✭Boro

Congratulations on solving it finally - maybe i should have put a health warning on it :D

    10 + 25 = 35 * 2 = 70 * 3 = 210 * 4 = 840 + 1 = 841

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,560 ✭✭✭Boro

Thank God for that! (Although I suspect you may have found some evil formula to make them harder than usual.)

    Except you may be slipping:

    (50*(10+7))-(8+3)=839

can you use decimals in this? i got close:

    25*75=1875
    (7+1)/4=2
    1875/2=937.5
    937.5-4=933.5

    ..?
