It cost $40,000, so I presume they're including R&D rather than simply materials and manufacturing.

you know, it's one of those bikes i'd understand either argument. i hate some of it, then love it at the same time. don't think the paint job does it any favours

Not my fault you can't appreciate innovation. If people are willing to accept and "like" posts of Felts with multiple spacers, reflectors, pie plates, sloping saddles and misaligned handlebars, then I can post a slightly odd looking piece of genius that was one of a stable of bikes that pushed the limits of what was allowed in the sport. Would you throw your eyes to heaven at Obree's various efforts? Are they marvels of the aesthetic?

i see your point, but a big difference between an engineering marvel and aesthetically beautiful. The engineer in me can appreciate them fully.

The first often encompasses the second, Eiffel Tower for example. I think I stand on more solid ground than arguing that merely owning a bike makes it beautiful.

What strikes me about that (f'ugly !) Pinarello is that for all its radical design, the result was a less than 1% difference over the other rider on more standard machine. A lot is down to the rider - maybe it did actually turn a donkey into a racehorse, but its look appear to be a lot more radical than its performance.....

Can somebody please explain to me why 70s and 80s style frames are so cool at the moment? A large proportion of the bikes in this beauty thread are old steel type bikes. I like the simplicity and minimalism of the designs, but is the whole retro thing getting out of hand?
