    Easily fixed- get a mini-pump.
It actually is a mini pump, but one that can actually pump to 120psi with no problem. http://www.topeak.com/products/Mini-Pumps/RoadMorphG

I know CO2 pumps are small and handy but i am reluctant to buy due to the price.

Are they the campy centaur levers he was selling? I should have a set coming on monday, just wondering what you think of them?

Well, as long as you are happy with the stack height you have at the moment (Park Tool recommend not more than 25mm for a carbon steerer) then having a whole load of useless weight above the stem is pointless and just looks crap.

The very ones, they are a fantastic job. Much better than the original veloce.
Something to watch for if you're fitting them yourself is the attachment screw is changed from older models. It has a torx not an allen head (it's not obvious).

but might be an issue if you ever go to sell it a bit of adjustment wont go amiss in that case

FWIW the mechanic who built my bike recommended keeping one spacer above the stem, for mechanical sympathy reasons.

Dirk, presumably that 25mm stack max recommended by Park the amount above the headtube and below the stem, including the headset cap?

I believe it's just spacer height.

If it's a carbon steerer, they recommend having it protrude just above the stem to avoid cracking the lip of the steerer, in which case you will need at least one 5mm spacer to properly compress the bearings (otherwise tightening the plug does nothing).

Also, I think if you are riding a bike with the intention of "what it looks like when you sell it on" then you are doing it wrong. Have it setup for you and worry about the next guy when the time comes. I wouldn't ride around with a fugly looking steerer tube because I'm trying to preserve it for potential buyers...that should be added to the rules.

    From ParkTool:
Threadless forks with carbon fiber steering columns have special concerns. There is a limit to the amount of spacers between the stem and the headset. Too many spacers may stress the carbon fiber and lead to failure. Contact the fork manufacturer for limits in regards to your fork. Generally, manufacturers recommend no more than 20mm additional stack height between stem and upper race.

well thats fair enough but don't make out that the weight is the issue, I don't see everyone trimming their seatposts as they don't need the extra length!

So if you'd cut it down you'd have been faster on the cross bike last weekend ;)

But seriously...you actually weighed a bit you gut off did you?

Nah, I just weighed the cut steerer.

Seatpost-wise, I measured the seatpost length I needed and bought one as short as possible (leaving enough for minimum insertion length). But I'm planning to chop down my carbon one when it goes into my road bike (the Ti one is destined for the cross bike).

My Viper mountain bike that I built last December, love this bike but might go for a carbon frame soon. Does anybody have a Viper frame or bike and if so what are your comments or feelings?
