yeh this is great but it's a pity that other companies can get away with selling 512k service for more than the 4meg service

if this was widely available every1 would get it

yo yo, how much Kb per sec would u say would we get ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,427 ✭✭✭ando

at first I taught it was a mistake. 4mbps is the speed you get from the Usb modem, but no, they are actually offering a 4mbps connection   amazing to think some of the Lan networks i goto are still only on 10mbps. Soon the internet connections are going to be faster

i'm no good at maths but i think 512k goes at 60kb a second and if that's right 4mb should go at 480kb a second

    i'm probally wrong though

i thought that, but id say its less, even so at 350 kb lets say, CS ping would be <10.
    sweet.

    Fair play :)

I'd be interested to know about the contention ratio and whether the 4MBit is split between everyone on the loop or is dedicated to your connection (I assume the former :))

    sweet.

Increased bandwidth does not imply decrease in ping, EVER.
You can get <10ms pings on serial cable, or I2C buses, and they run at nowhere near 4Mbit

Routing determines ping, bandwidth only helps with stability.

I could get 5ms ping with my wireless connection, if it didn't go through about 20 hops before reaching the server.

Is there anyone out there who has this ?

I dont know how Big a company Casey Cablevision is, I have never heard of them

But c-mon,,, if they can get a service like this.

NTL or Eircom must be able to.

This is incredibly depressing:(. When are we in the sticks (Dublin) ever going to get such speeds?.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

right... time to set about backhauling a few of these 4Mbit packages to Cork!

Ibb installed my service with a nice 4mb connection(until traffic was sorted, lasted 2 weeks). If you could find a server to support that connection you would get 460 .

OH MAN! That is so depressing!

i've got to find a work and move there!

how is that town btw? never been there

and cany anyone clarify if the 4MB is shared between people?

and DAMN Cr3mo! 100MB lines in Sweden!!! have to learn Swedish :)

    Placebo - 36 Degrees.

    Lots of stuff redues pings

Apart from Hardware the most important stuff from your ISP is

    Good network design
Good peering agreements and Transit providers ( Level3 , MCI, etc - tier 1 providers )
    Good routing protocols

but at the end of the day if the server you are trying to connect to has a bad ISP , you may experience high latency and high ping times.....

The question is a bit of a "how long is a bit of string"

If I had that connection I would download The Internet.

Its a joke the way the Swedes are so far ahead of us on broadband. Why? Why does the "Silicon Valley of Europe" not have a 100mb connection in every home???
