Every time I go to open an app, I get the following message: "Windows cannot find Sikmgo.exe
This program is needed for opening files of type 'Application''...

It then askes for the location.

I've done a virus scan and an online virus scan with trendmicro and even ran adaware and spybot while having the drive as a slave in another machine but nothing has come up.

I googled for sikmgo.exe and had a look in the MS knowledgebase, but could'nt find anything..

Any ideas? I really don't want to reinstall Win98..

Oh, and it won't let me run msconfig!!

run regedit and search for the file.
See what's it's related to and delete all references if the application appears to be unneccessary.

have you searched the HD for that file?
What happens when you try to run regedit? any errors or do you get the same thing?
    try running regedt32.exe
If it doesn't run, make a note of it's location, boot from a floppy and run it there.

    Sorry, bit rusty on win98!

    click once on an application

then once hilighted hold the shift key

then right click on the application and choose OPEN WITH

select explorer (not internet explorer) and tick the box that says "always use this program to open this type of file"

    then click ok

    Sorted! :o

I've tried all that but the PC just won't let me do anything. Tried right clicking on an app but when i choose explorer, I still get the same message.

    Can't open a DOS box either:confused:

ah christ. so you can't open anything?
This sounds like a right PITA.
Try running Win98 setup again, not a full re-install.

No use, I'll just have to do a reinstall.

It sounds like an app that is a trojan or something.

It's a file that you ran recently - MRU = MostRecentlyUsed

You can try doing a find in MS-DOS and locating the file that way. Then delete it.

    It's not part of Windows.

The image posted MRU etc - just indicates you searched for it.. DOC Find etc.

autoruns (stickies) is fairly good at finding programs that start up in reg / ini / startup folders etc.

Usual of starting up in safe mode to bypass many startups.

    Hopefully it won't reappear.
