Mirror 'blind spots' in cars banned by EC
    11/02/2004 - 2:21:16 pm

New rules banning dangerous “blind spots” in rear-view mirrors on cars come into force next year, the European Commission said today.

Technical changes approved by Euro MPs in Strasbourg will mean manufacturers have to increase the field of vision for drivers of cars, buses and lorries.

New technology enables experts to ensure the blind-spot problem is all but eliminated.

“As many severe road accidents at crossings, junctions or roundabouts are caused by drivers unaware other road users are very close to, or beside, their vehicles, these measures will reduce blind spots in the immediate area around vehicles,” said EU Enterprise Commissioner Erkki Liikanen.

“As drivers, we are all responsible for improving road safety. But legislation can also help save lives. Only a Europe-wide solution can help local and national governments in these efforts by mandating common EU standards in car design.”

Under the new rules, improved vision in indirect vision systems and rear-view mirrors will begin to be seen on new vehicle models from next year, with all new vehicles obliged to conform by 2010.

The changes increase the compulsory minimum field of vision and, for some vehicles, will involve extra mirrors to ensure there are no blind spots at all.

New technology will help improve the curvature of mirrors to ensure there are no blind spots, while the development of camera systems will replace mirrors for larger vehicles.

The new EU law is based on studies and research ordered by the Commission in conjunction with EU governments, the vehicle industry and consumer groups.

Thats fair enough, but cars are still being built with huge A B and C pillars - plenty of blind spots there.

Drivers that are too stupid to look around them because they don't know what a blind spot is or where the blind spots in their car are will still cause accidents, and it doesn't matter what fancy technology gets thrown at the problem.

Perhaps if the EC cleaned up the EU gene pool 'because it would stop accidents happening if we aborted all the idiots' it would help?

What they could do is train people to drive properly, train them how to drive in an emergency, train them how to handle a car in icy slippy conditions etc etc. No, of course they couldn't do that, they blew cash on some stupid study with a bunch of morons who had nothing better to do than take part in it. End rant.
