    Boredom is a terrible thing...
Originally printed by the Sunday Tribune:
Irish nerds have Europe Quaking in their boots (The European Championships in Quake - the computer game - kick off this week)

Six young Irish men will travel to London on Friday to battle for their country's pride, and for the ultimate geek trophy - the European Quake Championships. The Irish team has already won the Four Nations trophy this year, beating England, Scotland and Wales and have now qualified for the last eight in the search for European glory.
"Obviously this is not a sport," said Tom Murphy, the manager of the Irish team. "But it is very competitive - it's a bit like darts." Quake is one of the most popular computer games, a gruesome, futuristic shoot 'em up with medieval overtones. Players can play against the computer, can play against other people or can play in teams against other teams.
Quake is played on PCs rather than on gaming consoles which means it has exploded in popularity as an internet based game. This is the game of choice for computer programmers and IT workers across the world. Wherever coders sit late into the night on punishing deadlines, wherever IT support staff are left idle for a few minutes, wherever a large LAN is available, Quake is played.
Ireland's chances are not fancied. "We might get through the first stage, though if we draw Germany, Sweden and Finland, we've got no chance," said Murphy. "But if it's Belgium, England or Slovenia in our group, we've a good chance of getting out."
But what is at stake is more than pride or geek-kudos. Tournaments like this are becoming big business, attracting the full and lucrative support of equipment manufacturers who welcome more demanding games in order to sell more capable machines. "This is supported by people like Intel, AMD [chip manufacturers] and Logitech - they see it as the next way to sell their products. You don't need a really powerful chip to run Microsoft Word, but you do need one to play advanced games," said Murphy.
It is with this kind of support that Irish players will soon enter the professional gamer's realm. An Irish qualifying round will be held in Dublin next month to decide who takes part in the Computer Gaming Professional League Europe - a European competition which is likely to carry a prize of £50,000.
"In the US and Asia, prizes are regularly $50,000. Win two or three of them a year and you are doing very nicely," said Murphy.
Murphy's role is typical of the manager's role in much higher profile competitive arenas. "I sort out the hotels, travel, girlfriends," he said. His job description could come straight from Alex Ferguson's lips. "There's one player who's totally attached to this new girlfriend and won't go anywhere without her. I have to make sure that they don't go on the absolute rip the night before a match," said Murphy.
In a distant echo of legendary football manager Bill Shankley, Murphy for a moment forgets the original audience for Quake. "This is not for kids, this is serious," he said, but with national pride and up to £50,000 a time up for grabs, he may be right.
