Heatsink lapping

The heatsink i'm planning on installing to my cpu looks like it could do with some lapping given the finish on it, problem is I can't seem to find anywhere that has fine enough grit to do it, i'm also a little unsure exactly how fine and how many stages I need. Some people seem to think you need it as fine as 2000 grit, some say 1000, anyone have an idea how fine i'd need it and where in dublin I can get my hands on it, finest the hardware stores seem to do is 600 or so.

Google lads it's a lot quicker and easier....

    http://www.bigbruin.com/html/lapping-guide.htm

You can get the paper at auto stores.

Good advice but i'd say you could skip to every second grit 600 ,1000, 2000.

Use those 3 and you'll be fine.

I actually did use google remarkably enough, but that turned up guides advocating the use of 8 different grades all the way down to those utilising only 2, thanks for the advice anyway, since i'd never tried it I was hoping someone had an idea of which stepping would be the best return without sanding all day.

And yeah auto stores are the the common answer for where to get it, though so far the ones i've called either don't have it or don't have their stuff grit numbered it's all "fine" or "superfine", but maybe i'm not looking far enough afield.

Finally got around to visiting your suggestion, they had exactly what I needed, thanks for the tip :) . Anyone looking for wet/dry lapping paper should have a look there, they had stuff up to and far exceeding the 2000 grit I needed.

Or just pop into a local motor factors, they should have up to 1200 (which isint far off rubbing it with ordinary paper :)) .

whats the Innovatek Water Cooling like ?

How much did it cost where did you get it .....how hard was it to install etc ? and do you think iit was worth the money

.Sorry for the off topic question

It cost me €230 from www.hitide.ie . I looked into it pretty well and the XXS cooling kit was pretty much the top of the range according to overclockers.com . It got great reviews .

Installing......... i wouldnt be scared to do anything with my case or components so i just got a makita drill and a hammer :) and fitted it very sweetly into my sonata in under an hour. Normally you have to drill 4 holes (mount the pump) , cut a big blow hole (for radiator, normally at top of case) and drill 4 holes to mount the rad. The rest is easy. I must take a photo and show you the inside of my case, its crazy to say the very least...... about 2mm between the rad and GFX card, 1mm between the res and my audigy, 3-4mm between the zalman (artic cooler either, been changing around) and the audigy. I had to push up the PSU rail to fit the rad (only a little) so the PSU just barely gets in. Ive all the hard disk rails full (2xPATA - temp, 2xSATA), all the cd bays full (dvd burner, dvd pioneer slot in, hard disk caddy)...... i just estimated and started working and got it perfect :) .

Worth the money? Good question, performance to noise is very hard to beat....... you get a fantastic overclock with very little noise. The other advantage is you can cool your GFX , HD, NB also. The pump is the loudest thing in my pc at the min (am going to quieten it) ........ very quiet system but not silent.

Personally i wouldnt go for water cooling with the products that are out there now. Go for a 120mm fan (mabye 2) blowing air though your case (running at 5v - silent), a passivly cooled NB, Zalman 7000 on low........... and you will prob have as quiet a system if not more so than mine (still gotta change it around) . You mightent get as good of an overclock but it will be very close.

Ya i have 2 antec 120mm fans in my pc ...And soon ill have a coolmaster Aero 7 heatsink in it as well

It sounds to expensive tbh for water cooling right now :( compeared to 30 euro per 120mm fan and 37 euro for the aero 7

And ya PLEASE take a pic of the inside of your case id love to see the way the thing looks with all that jammed into it

Your nicely setup with the 120mm fans, and im pretty sure you have an Antec TP PSU....... which has lovely "fan" only connectors to run the fans at low speeds when the PSU isint under strain (i found it completely silent).

Add to that a Zalman 7000 and you have a very queit system (depends on your NB and Hard drives for almost silence). I wouldnt get the Aero7, its a good cooler but not for what your looking for. www.hitide.ie have the Zalman CPU cooler, the Aero7 isint designed to be silent and will certainly be louder than the Zalman.

Will get my camera 2moro and post a pic or 2 aswell :)

Ya please do :) and yep i have the antec psu that comes with the Sontan which is very quite god bless antec.

But tbh im not looking for a quite pc just a cool none stressed out one

Im right in the middle of completely changing my system (PSU, NB, GFX, Cables , Hard Drives) so its a total mess as you can see :) . I now have the artic cooler fitted and running on the 9700 and audigy 2 moved down one slot (pressing up against my water res  ).

I will post a few more pics when i get it sorted properly and prob with the zalman aswell. Its hard to tell from the pics but literly theres no space for anything else excepy small PCI cards...... my desk is also all over the place, so many boxes around the place (notice the fortron PSU on the ground next to the artic cooler)

Jasus that is a tight squeeze,i was thinking about getting the antec ''super lan boy'' for my WC rig it has the same dimensions as the sonata but i would mount the 2 rad's i have at the top of the case-but i wouldent be able to use the first 5 1/4 drive bay.I just replaced the tubing with uv reactive stuff and also had a cool idea to do with left over tubing,i cut it up into spiral wrap for all my other cables,it was really easy and turned out great imo.

 its tighter than a 18 year old porn star in their.

But you have it done up well with rounded cables + some well placed cable ties and the such i like the look of the water cooling takes up a lot of room though  ....do you build/repair pc's for a liveing or what ?

My pc is but a baby compeared to yours :(

If i had done that i would have use of only one 5 1/4" bay and i would still have to sort out case air flow. As it is i have the 2x120mm fans blowing air out of the case running silently and intend on putting another 120mm in the front to blow air in @5v..... also im changing my PSU to a fortron with 120mm fan @5v.

That sounds pretty sweet. If i had a clear side i would prob do something simular.

its tighter than a 18 year old porn star in their.

lol yea its pretty hard to work with at the min!! I had to cut 5mm off the zalman GFX heatpipe just so it would fit in (it looks much tighter when i have that installed).
But you have it done up well with rounded cables + some well placed cable ties and the such

Well thats probably the most untidy my case has been , its normally much neater i promise :) . My second computer is the fancy lookin one with the clear side (xaserII) and all neons and blue PSU.....and its very quiet aswell.

i like the look of the water cooling takes up a lot of room though ....do you build/repair pc's for a liveing or what ?

It takes up a huge ammount of space, especially in a sonata which is small to begin with. Ive built quite a few systems but thats not what i do for a living , im actually an IT student, hardware just a hobby .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,317 ✭✭✭CombatCow

Nope thats what i have this baby for :http://www.kiss-technology.com/?p=dp1000&v=company

It plays just about everything, from conventional DVD, DivX® 3.11, DivX® 4, DivX® 5 and XviD movies to audio CDs, home-burned CD, MP3 and Ogg Vorbis audio. :D

anyway with the uv cold cats turned off it just looks like plain coloured tubing, which is propper bo'

Might try to overclock meh pc tomorrow,if i can be arsed.

Ahhh, i just do everything from my PC..... 19" screen, Audigy2, surround sound and a huge ammount of Divx's . It does as my entertainment, my work PC, my DVD ripper, gaming , pretty much anything i can use it for .

Thats a nice little dvd player and plays everything, how much did it cost you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,317 ✭✭✭CombatCow

Well yeah i use my pc for the same stuff as you,but you cant beat slapping 6 movies on a dvd-r and watching them on a couch in your sitting room ;)

It was E200 on elara,it's played every movie iv thrown at it so far, highly recommended.

God thats brilliant, and €200 isint that bad. I have tonnes of Divx's and my solution to the "sitting on the couch watching them" is dragging my pc to the tv and using tv out..... which ive done once (too much hassle).

Ive been playin around with VCD's when i want to watch a divx film on dvd player, some are too long and need to be cut and put onto 2........

Glad i asked, well sussed man.
