god people get very excite dsome times. Its like those people who get up really early to go to hmv to buy a new cd just so they can be 1 of the 1st, then about 2 hours after the shop opens the normal people stroll in and buy the exact same cd. I no this is a bit of a landmark occasion and all, but are people losing the sense of what getting married is all about. Its a day that should be planned out and special. Its like sum sort of cults mass marriage ceremony.

Appologies for anyone planning on getting married soon, im not comparing ur marriage to a cd:o

Using the cd analogy... Think about it this way: 90% of the rest of the population has been allowed to listen to and enjoy this cd for the past couple of decades/millenia. But because you're gay you are not allowed to get it or listen to it.

Then they stop this policy and say that gay folk can now buy and enjoy this music. So you and your boyfriend of 35 years( like one of the couples in the article I linked to) who always wanted to listen to that cd and thought long and hard about getting it now have the option.

Do you decide to wait another while or do you want to get it right away ?

At the end of the day every couple are different. Some become very patient after x no. of years and some become less patient. Each to their own.

'Bout time. As someone once said "half the fun's is in the preperation". Sure, a civil union is nice and all, but its nice to have all your friends, family, etc, and their friends, family, etc, under "one roof", to see the joining.
A civil union seems like a hi-yer-married-bye situation, whereas a marraige takes the whole day, the camcorder, etc.

If I can get one since they (big-fancy-marriges) got invented, I don't see why ye all shouldn't, either.

Whats the legel implications of this for irish peole? Im assuming that seeing as the law hasnt been changed here that you cant sort of "work around " it by going over to the us, getting married, then coming bac and being legally married. There was another thing I was wondering about was gay peoples view on the whole marriage thing. I mean does it hold the same significance (sp?) as for straight people seeing as it has never been an issue.

Hope i get myself a nice new cd someday and then me and the cd get us a few s8cm discs to take care of :D (k ill stop now, this cd thing is going 2 far)

*edit* I think on the big day out issue (ie the wedding day) most families r probably best kept apart, I dread my wedding day cos i reckon my family r gonna kill each other (couple of long running feads, coupled with a few of the older , less open minded lot not knowing bout my cousin being gay and one of their comments on the whole thing. All in all should be a fun day:D )

Eh no, not quite. It's different because the CD will stop going on sale by Tuesday probably (which is when new legislation will stop the same sex marriages). So that's another reason for the rush.

Also California has, if I recall, ratified marriage as being between a man and a woman. The marriage certificate's wording alone has changed to, I think, "First applicant" and "Second applicant". It's legality is questionable and will be tested, in the courts, on the grounds of California's discrimination laws against sexuality. Given it's tenuous legal stance in the State itself, there's no chance it'll be recognised elsewhere yet and the marriage certificates currently issued will most likely be torn apart when the case goes, eventually, to the Californian Supreme Court....

A gay mate in the states sent me this...
Thought it was a bit amusing...

12 reasons why gay people should not be allowed to get married

    1. Homosexuality is not natural, much like eyeglasses, polyester, and birth control.

    2. Heterosexual marriages are valid becasue they produce children. Infertile couples and old people can't legally get married because the world needs more children.

    3. Obviously, gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

    4. Straight marriage will be less meaningful if Gay marriage is allowed, since Britney Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage was meaningful.

    5. Heterosexual marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are property, blacks can't marry whites, and divorce is illegal.

    6. Gay marriage should be decided by people, not the courts, because the majority-elected legislatures, not courts, have historically protected the rights of the minorities.

    7. Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire counrty. That's why we have only one religion in America.

    8. Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

    9. Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

    10. Children can never suceed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why single parents are forbidden to raise children.

    11. Gay marriage will change the foundation of society. Heterosexual marriage has been around for a long time, and we could never adapt to new social norms because we haven't adapted to things like cars or longer lifespans.

    12. Civil unions, providing most of the same benefits as marriage with a different name are better, because a "seperate but equal" institution is always constitutional. Seperate schools for African-Americans worked just as well as seperate marriages for gays and lesbians will.

I don't think they'll ever listen to reason.

The pope can hardly think full stop, never mind bout anything in particular, i reckon he concentrates all his efforts on trying to remember to breathe:D It wont be long now till the next 1 comes along so things mite change then, maybe that gay priest/bishop (or whatever he got promoted 2) will get the nod at sum stage in the future.

I really don't see the Catholic leaders really embracing anything like that in the next ten fifteen years at least. It's an issue that they'll refuse to acknowledge for as long as they can and then they'll pussyfoot around it. It's so easy for them to play the faith card and I think only when the current generation either dies out or gets some cop on we'll be faced with their bigotry.

The issue of gay marriage is NOT about a religious institution. If gay marriage was legalized, no faith would be legally compelled to recognize same-sex unions. Instead, this is STRICTLY about the civil institution of marriage as a legal contract between two consenting (and hopefully loving) adults.

    Found this a good read.
