hidden charges of upgrading to DSL

    Hi guys,

I'm new here but will keep this brief. A colleague of mine has been planning to upgrade to DSL. He sometimes works at home and uses an ISDN line. When he enquired about upgrading the line to DSL at a 3G store in Tallaght, he was told that this upgrade would cost e160 because an engineer would have to call to his house. However, if he cancelled his ISDN connection and subsequently opts for DSL it only costs him e24.99, which he found reasonable.

Anyhow, he calls into a different 3G store (this time in Blanchardstown) he was finally able to avail of the offer of DSL self-install option that included a modem and a month's free connection (plus an Xbox discounted to e100 as part of the overall bundle). However the order was rejected because only the landline owner (ie, the landlord) could avail of the option. Either way, he caught up with the landlord and it seemed to be okay.

When he went to a third 3G store in Henry street he was told that unless he signed up for direct debit he could not avail of the special bundle offer - but that implied bank charges on standing order. He was then told because he had Phonewatch it would imply a e190 engineer charge which would have to be paid upfront and Eircom would then deduct e10 off the broadband line rental every month until the e190 was refunded.

WTF!!! This all sounds quite sinister and sneaky on Eircom's part (no surprise there).

Has anyone else had a similar experience with hidden charges with upgrading to DSL?

    CJ
