when a company says something like 24 to 1 contention, does that refer to just that company or all companies on the exchange? for instance if i get 365's radsl i doubt there's be anywhere near 48 people who have 365's radsl on my exchange. would this be split with eircom or esat etc?

You will be contended with customers from all the different ISP's. They are all considered the same at the exchange level, it's not further along that they are seperated.
