    Folks,
For some reason my mouse and keyboard have just stopped working completely. The keyboard works in DOS ok, so it's not a hardware or BIOS problem. Must be WinXP.

Mouse doesn't move at all and no reaction from the keyboard, i.e. Caps lock light etc.

Same thing happens in safe mode and all other XP boot options. Any ideas/suggestions?

    Thanks.

    /edit - forgot to mention - both are PS/2.

    OK, an update.
I tried "repairing" windows through the Windows XP CD, and so it ends up with the usual WinXP install. During which, I got message asking me to click "Continue", but the mouse wouldn't move again! Nor would the keyboard work. So Windows Repair doesn't work.

    Here is the confusing part:
Both keyboard and mouse work perfectly (OS/2).

But: when I do a post-BIOS check when it lists the IRQ channels, it lists "Input Device" IRQ channel as being "NA" instead of giving an IRQ channel (which should be 1 to 17, or whatever).

So the keyboard works in DOS, but as soon as any part of windows loads, both mouse and keyboard stop working. As, I've tried repairing the windows installation and both the keyboard and mouse don't work even during this, what do I do next?

The only thing I can think to do next is just to reformat the drive and re-install XP from scratch, but I don't want to do this until I know that wiping windows will solve the problem.

*Any* ideas as to what could be causing this?

The worst thing could be a motherboard error, but if this is the case, would my keyboard and mouse be working during DOS? (I tested the mouse on a DOS program and it works fine).

    Sinecure.

how's about getting a copy of knoppix or mandrake live and seeing if they'll work with that. if they do then its a windows problem.
