Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Manchester United FC captain Roy Keane has received a one-match ban following his sending-off in the UEFA Champions League defeat by FC Porto.

    Challenge on goalkeeper
Keane was dismissed in the closing stages of the first knockout round first leg, which Porto won 2-1 in Portugal, following a challenge on opposition goalkeeper Vítor Baía. He caught the keeper with a trailing foot as he jumped over him.

    Sits out return
UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body today ruled he would sit out the return leg against the Portuguese champions next Tuesday (9 March). He will, therefore, be available to play in the quarter-finals should United overcome their first-leg deficit.

Thats fair enough punishment. I thought a 3-match ban was a bit OTT for the offence.

well imo i think a 1 match ban is a lucky escape for him considering he did stamp on him!!! but we do need him when we do go through to the next round

Glen Johnson got a 2 or 3 match ban for kicking the ball away after the whistle was blown, Keane deserved a bigger ban than what he got.

I think it was a fair decision, there was very little in the incident.

    I think he's slightly lucky. Was sure he'd get a 2 or a 3 match ban.

    UEFA appeal against Keane verdict
    Tuesday, 09 March 2004
An appeal has been lodged by UEFA, in accordance with its disciplinary regulations, against the one-match ban given to Manchester United FC captain Roy Keane for his dismissal in last month’s UEFA Champions League first knock-out round first leg against FC Porto.

    UEFA’s power of appeal
Under Article 50 of the UEFA disciplinary regulations, UEFA has the power of appeal against verdicts taken by its disciplinary authorities. In the initial proceedings, Keane was found guilty of improper conduct, which carries a one-match suspension. However, UEFA is asking for the act to be considered as assault, which would mean a ban of at least three matches.

    Missing tonight
The one-match ban was announced by the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body last Friday, and means that Keane misses tonight’s return leg against the Portuguese champions.

    Challenge on goalkeeper
Keane was dismissed in the closing stages of the first game, which Porto won 2-1 in Portugal, following a challenge on opposition goalkeeper Vítor Baía. The Irish midfielder caught the keeper with his foot as he jumped over him.

    Appeal hearing
The appeal hearing is likely to take place on the afternoon of Friday 19 March.

There is a difference between "stepping on" and "stamping" someone.

I hope there appealing roberto carlo's ban too, he got a two match ban for punching a bayern munich player in the face. If not, i dont think fergies gonna be very happy.

Well there certainly was intent on Keane's behalf, he was nearly over hime before he stamped on him. Whether or not he deserves three matches for something like that is not for me to decide, but as in all things, there should be some modicum of fairness involved, if he does get the three matches, which may see him out of two games next year ;) then surely some of the other similar goings on should be appealed too.

Not a Chance as he doesn,t Play for Man United which as we saw with the Ferdinand case and here again merits special punishment.

Yeah, but the thing for UEFA is that the intent was there. It's the same as the difference between punching someone in the face and shoving them in the face. Keane didn't need to touch the goalkeeper, it was a petulant act from a frustrated player.

For what it's worth, I think Keane should have been red-carded, but any extra punishment on top of that is a bit much, especially since it's UEFA appealing against UEFA.

    lol

    Now this is crazy
Uefa are not satisfied with their own disciplinary body's decision to suspend Roy Keane for only one match following his sending off against Porto.
The Manchester United captain appeared to tread on Vitor Baia as he struggled to meet a through ball by Cristiano Ronaldo and was shown the red card in the 2-1 defeat in Portugal.

The Uefa Control and Disciplinary Body dished out a one-match ban to the Irishman on Friday, ruling the midfielder out of Tuesday night's return leg at Old Trafford.

However, bizarrely, Uefa are allowed to lodge appeals against suspensions meted out by their own disciplinary authorities, and they are requesting a ban of at least three matches for Keane.

    Interesting to see what happens

Right you're not allowed say anything the next time an Arsenal fan starts complaining about the disciplinary bias against Arsenal

Why is that? Its fact that ferdinand has bee treated more harsly than others found guilty of more serious offences and if you read this thread you will see even non Utd supporters find the decision of EUFA to Appeal its own decision strange. I make my decision on the available evidence , to date i have not see any to support the conspiracy theory against the gunners if i do i will say so..
