    has anyone recently subscribed to net 1's service afte rthe coverage increased?

    they currently cover the following northeast areas......Dundalk, Ardee, Philipstown, Tinure, Kilsarn, Mulary, Greenmount, Stabannan, Tallanstown, Darver, Dromiskin, Aclint, Smamore, Shanlis, Collon, Annagassan, Stonehouse, Ballymac, Knockbridge, Kilcurry, Parts of Ravensdale and Blackrock.


    and testing here:
    Drogheda Stamullen, Laytown, Monasterboice, Gormanstown, Bettystown, Togher, Clougherhead, Dunleer, Castlebellingham.

    the speeds that they offer is that divided by 2 to get the corect download speed?

    i.e. what is the upload download ratio.

    hopfully they will egg just a little further until they are out my way.

    divide by 8 is the usual.. but theres something odd about their speed listings.

    They list their service as being "576kb/s" which is slightly misleading. Some people might confuse that with kB/s.

    If you were downloading at 576kB/s, you'd get a megabyte in under 2 seconds, but 576kb/s=576kbps, and that would download a megabyte in about 17 seconds.

    Basically, the usual standard for internet speed is kbps, but they wrote it as kb/s. And the way to convert kb/s to kB/s is divide by 8.

    Nothing in the previous posts warrants this, but I forsee potential confusion, so a quick kbits/kbytes tutorial:

    56kbps = 56000 bits per second (not 57344bits/s)
    unit should be written as kbps or kbits/s not kb/s

    1kB = 1 kilobyte = 1024 bytes = 8192bits (8 bits = 1 byte)

    Ergo, theoretical maximum download rate over over a 56kbps connection is:

    56000/8192 = 6.836kB/s

    Concordantly, dividing 56 by 8 will only give a rough estimate of the maximum download spead (eg 7kB/s).

    Max possible download rate over 512kbps is 62.5kB/s
    Max possible download rate over 256kbps is 31.25kB/s
