I just read the message board.
It's full of *****ing and infighting and stupidity.

Please read the following to the end.

I spent the weekend at a lan, having fun with friends, playing quake and laughing. We broke up the lan early because I had to come back and cart my machine up 4 flights of stairs to admin IQCL and then I read this sort of ****.

Not only that but ppl having a go at Vexorg and using his name, even in mistake.
Gerry is one of the people stumping up the cash for the French trip. I may mouth off about it but its half his cash too so the least I think he deserves is a civil tone.

I've given the details of how to play quake on the internet to Compu-times (another thing I did over the weekend for this so called "community"), so we will probably get a ton of new players in the next few weeks. The piece is due to run on Monday week, about a week from now.

The url of this board, quake.ie and a number of other irish quake sites were sent to them as well, along with the location of our irc server.

This sort of childishness does not help us appear like mature rational adults.
Any of it. The power-hungryness, the rudeness, the ignorance and the plain-stupidity is getting on my wick now.

If we dont start to shape up and if we cant present a reasonably mature front to the general press then I'm out of here. I have better things I can do with my time.

There are people here who are working towards building something here. I dont see many of them on that list.

I think its time we had a shake up of the ops in #quake, but I think the occupants of #quake should take a good long hard look at themselves, cos when me and slosh and conor and suds and eric and eddie and cloud and the other people working for Irish Quake **** off, yer going to be playing on barrysworld. For ever.
Check that list and see how many we've lost already.

I agree muppetry has increased dramatically in the last while. I think if we have one of the major papers running a story on this community next week we should try and clean up our act.

Lads if we get enough positive exposure then that opens the door to sponsorship and maybe improved services from the ISP's. If however certain people continue on the path they have chosen, Quake in Ireland in its present form will die. People like MP, Dev, Vexorg, Cloud and all the others who put an awful lot of work into Lans, Competitions and even sponsored trips for an Irish team to France, will get fed up and leave us all to it.

Remember if you have a problem with someone take it to them, no here. If you have a problem with an op in #Quake take it to Shiva its his channel and in the end his is the opinion that counts.

This ****e on the boards, IRC and the servers has to be stoped. It's clear that any measures taken until now haven't worked. There are still a handful of idiots screwing things up for everybody else. I think that that in itself is an important point. There are only a FEW morons in Irish Quake, nearly all fitting the description of likkle kids with attitude problems. (Although there are a couple who should just know better). The problem is that these few drive other, normally sane people, to do insane things.

What we need to stop this is some clear, universal, enforced policy. There are three distinct areas to be addressed:
1. IRC.
2.This (and other) boards.
3.The servers.

Once you can get the people in charge of these three areas to agree a policy on disruptive people, and futhermore ENFORCE such a policy, the problem will vanish fairly quickly. This is what I propose:

1. The creation of a "shun" list.
This is a list of names that are banned from #Quake, Kicked from the servers on sight, and have their board accounts closed ASAP. If the person in question changes his nick, and shuts his gob (which is what I would do if faced with no Quake at all), then well and good. We would have achieved our objective.

2. Publication of a code on conduct for all Quake players, in all Quake forums. It needn't absolute and definitive, but at least it would provide a benchmark. For any violations of this code, see point 1.

3. The creation of a position akin to that of a relations officer. This person will mediate all complaints made my people who feel they cannot sort it out themselves. They listen to both sides of a story, look at the evidence presented, and make recommendations to the appropriate people. This would also be the guy/gal that you talk to if you get abuse on IRC/Servers. If you have a log or a screenie, you send it to him/her. This position is merely a filter for people who have better things to do. It also centralises a role that allows us to build up a picture of who is actually stirring **** on Quake, and who is being blamed for it.

If you think that no-one will want to perform this task, I would gladly do it. It's this, or playing with a 500+ ping to BW.....

Tom, you are right, this is a CommUNITY, and so we should stick together. There's a general change in attitude that is needed to turn things around. If there is to be an influx of new blood into Quake, then we need to sort ourselves out before it arrives.

Quake for me is a form of entertainment, but I ain't been having a whole lotta fun recently. I'd like to help change that. We have to get reorganised, or we're dead in the water.

I've not read all the replys to what Tom's said here, but I totally agree with him.

I'm sure everyone taht was at QP remembers it a an absolute ball - I know I do. We owe most of all of it to Tom for setting it up and financially fronting it all!!! Jaysus lads and ladies...that alone is reason enough to stand up and pay attention to someone like him.

As for having a go at Gerry / Vex. All I can say is that I've met Gerry a few times and he is an absolute gent! A bit of an un-sung hero methinks - again as Tom has said - fronting half the cash for this French trip which is a WHOLE lotta moola!!!

If we as a community are to move forward, the crap has to stop. If you've not read my post about the future, read it. Things are really going to happen for us all in the next few months. If we do receive a new influx of fresh virgin blood - let's not throw them off the scene by acting the muppets on servers or IRC. IRC especially can be a daunting new thing - I didn't kow what the hell I was at when I first started a little under a year ago. People like Cloud, DeV, Vex and crew helped me out and gave me a little advice etc.

I'm not inclined to be a sh!te stirrer, but I do have a laugh on IRC and in servers and whatever else. If we cop on, we're likely to see more of QP type events happening as large companies such as Telecom will sit up and notice an opportunity to earn through advertising.

I don't want ppl telling me I'm atking it too seriously - because to anyone who know's me, they'll know that that is one of the most ridiculuous statements to make - I play Quake for the fun. I go to IRC for the fun. I work on the league for fun - my own and all the participants.

I just hope its not going to turn out to be all the power is in the same few peoples hands as it is at the moment.Maybe let a few non irc ops or sever admins run the various wwwboard sections to balance out the power a bit.Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutly as the old saying goes.

I'm in total agreement with you on that one DeV. The immaturity of some people has gotten completely out of hand in the last while. Jaden has put foward a number good suggestions and I would like to add to those.

1. In relation to the IRC server, we could always make the permanent move to quakenet IRC, like cloud and others intended, and leave the existing one to the muppets.

2. Perhaps cloud could give editing privilages to a number of trusted people for his message board. These people could delete any offensive threads. This way we wouldn't have to put up with the childish catfights that we're always reading. Anyone who posts such an offensive post could be disciplined as detailed by Jaden. Though this might be a little time consuming.

3. The server could be configured so as to eliminate the elect function, and give a select few the admin codes. These admins would have instructions to kick muppets on sight.

As I said, these are only suggestions, and how succesful they may be I do not know, but I believe most are in agreement that something must be done.

Devore, I think it's great what you guys do here and I think you should stick with it. I know it must be frustrating with the muppets sometimes. With a bit of luck, your post will wise people up.

Any chance of printing that article on the boards, as I've been playing on Dutch & German servers cos I'm just a newbie who's been in Dublin since December with no idea how to get on the Irish servers. And I don't know where i can get Computimes.

If anybody wants to join me on Perfectkill or Twix Open, I'm on most nights. Or, if anyone wants to give me a server address. BTW, I'm running Q3 V1.17.
