Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hey, 21 year old male just geting my provisional haha so caught by the short n curlys ... Ive no plans on being a little boy racer. gona get a little ****ty 1L just looking at the posts and the last real good one was 8 months ago ...

    So any updates?

has anyone failed this? like whats the sucess rate of not going over the speed limit for 3 years?

also if your a provisional can they tell if your on a motorway?(dont even know is that still not allowed haha good luck on my theory test)

As for ... if you car gets robbed you can track where it is .... i can tell you for sure if your car gets robbed there gona break the speed limits and its gona beep like mad and there either gona get freaked out and think there in knight rider or check where the sounds coming from and rip that thing out :) then your 1200 euro down since you dont even own the box :)

just would like a bit of feed back... not that i have a choice, that ignition you need to be driving 6months before you can do it.

    Thanks for your time
    Paul

why not bite the bullet, get the first years insurance, do the ignition course, apply for your test and bobs your uncle. Personally I'd rather that than have insurance company "big brother" watching over me 24/7.

But then again thats just me... and I'm as paranoid as fúck...
(also, €1200 is just crazy money to outlay, that money could be better spent on your insurance)*

I remember a number of journalists were given cars fitted with it and they all broke the limits on several occasions.
I don't know how strict they are on you but given that they have your driving details (speeds, mileage, etc.) they can be more specific about prices but as it is too easy to occasionally exceed the speed limit whilst in traffic you could be shooting yourself in the foot.

But i think with this thing installed the first year i pay 3,500 including the beeping box, then in year 2 and in year 3 i pay 1,600 a year ... and then after the 3 years i get it take off and have 4 years no claims bonus and something like 60-70% NCB

So with this ignition what would 3 years work out as? surely its 4,500 for a 21 year old male then second year u do ignition and get 20% off thats 3,600 for second year and third year etc .... big saving with the big brother thing ... just i cant rob any banks or do any drive by's or they will know :P haha

and what would insurance without traksure cost over the same period?
You will only get your NCB if you don't make a claim but this applies to all ins. policies. However, as you say (I don't know correct facts on it) you may built you a full NCB quicker.
However, as they know your exact speeds over every mile your cover they will know how many times you broke the law. They copuld then up the policy accordingly (even on year 2). You could end up paying more in year 2 than in year 1! (or are you sure it is fixed price?)
In any case I don't trust insurance companies (never have and never will!) and would personally steer clear of this kind of offer.

Good article. I feel the tracking system without the prompt deletion of records has a high big brother level

It's only one step removed from being implanted with a black box ourselves :(

Its fixed rate, and you either get ****ed off the policy or keep it, like its not like ... oh you broke the limit 10 times thats an extra 250 quid this year... and they take into consideration for overtaking and dont think they bother even beeping at 30-40 mph zones, and duno where i read it(could have been on that link) but you have to be speeding 95% of the time ... now id say thats boll*x but lets say 40% of the time is even easy to do considering once you go over the limit it lets off this long beep... i thought it was silent and you know the way you wouldnt notice going into certain zones, thought it was a trap :) but it would be hard to keep speeding with that feckin thing beeping :)

Its a little box in your glove compartment, i wonder has anyone been caught rigging this up to an external power supply and have a switch, so if your driving at night (roads empty) you click the switch it runs off the battery and then u leave the box in your house :P id love to hear any mechanics point of view here like what stops that from happening? will your car not start without this box since it doesnt read off your speedometer im guessing its attached directly to the engine... and if this is so if the box breaks your car stops? and if its pluged out they will ring you within an hour to give out to you... so what happens if your car battery is dead or being replaced :) so many if's and whats

Is any of this specified in the contract you have to sign? I doubt it, so they can do whatever they please and not renewing giving a vaque reason such as "you've been speeding too often"

Apparently it is possible to put a switch between the box and the ignition so you can put it off whenever you want i dont think they would be too hard to figure out a way around it for anybody with a little bit of auto electic experience.

...until you are in an accident and the insurance assessor notices that the system has been tampered with and your insurance is deemed void.

im sure if you did that switch thing and then were in a crash that you'd make sure something in the glove compartment went flying and broke the cable into the box ... and you just tear off the switch :)

I'm not saying i want to do it, i aint the speeding type, was just wondering what restrictions they have put in to stop this and with restrictions comes complications like if the box broke would your car not start etc :) just knowledge seeking

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators Posts: 40,351 Mod ✭✭✭✭Seth Brundle

just to clarify, you don't need to be the speeding type to speed!
I don't think there is any driver on this forum who can honestly say that they have never exceeded the limit.
