Ooh i feel a phone call for compensation coming on, no satisfaction?...a call to ComReg is in order.

i think you'll find that your reliable little birdy is wrong..

not that i'm particularily against blaming esat or UTv for their inadequate service most of the time :)

but in this case it was an eircom fault that caused the problem, you'll have noticed earlier posts that made reference to eircom messages

Down in leixlip also. Funnily enough, the ppp server belongs to eircom, heres the log messages I'm getting.

    Mar 18 20:42:40 mpd: Name: "bas1.dbn.dublin.eircom.net"
    Mar 18 20:42:40 mpd: [pppoe] CHAP: rec'd CHALLENGE #1
Mar 18 20:42:41 mpd: [pppoe] LCP: authorization failed

Looks like its eircoms fault.. hopefully will be sorted soon.

from this I would guess that the problem was on the eircom equipment which wasn't forwarding the packets to the correct esat or utv systems....

Yeah resorting to alcohol is never a good way to deal with problems... It only makes things worse.

    Wohoo ;P Not banned anymore.

Xcellor is back, version 2 was buggy!

Ok... must make this relevant to the topic... Well.. has anyone phoned IOL BB this morning to ask what the problem is (was)?? I use is... because every two weeks there seems to be issues whether it be no connection, bad pings, patchy on/off/off/off service...

I'd ring them but they just put me in a bad mood when they start talking about contention issues and telling me that I am the only one who has reported a problem.... (heh.. yeah that's why it takes 30 mins for a free support guy to pick up)

I'll give UTV one point of commendation... At least they appear to acknowledge customer concerns and inform via bulletin boards... http://boards.iol.ie is never updated... I really question the purpose of it's existence because the people who run it are not directly involved with IOL thus know nothing about problems users encounter. The Announcement board that is supposed to be run by IOL admins is never updated.

I just rang IOL and got a nice recorded message saying "We are experiencing difficulties with our IOL broadband service. We applologize"

Anyone still having issues with IOL BB? I'm downloading pinging at acceptable rates.

This is beyond annoying at the moment. It was down this morning before I left for work, got back about ten mins ago, down again (was down all morning according to another irate internet user in the house). I hope it doesn't go down again before I get chance to press the "Submit Reply" button. Up and down on an hourly basis now...

Ahh well, at least I had one week without downtime. Back to normal now it seems.

Esat Business went down for me as well at 19.45 or so last night, was backup within 5 mins tho. Went down again for 5 mins at 23:00 or so.

Its almost worth paying €108 for this service*. Things are quickly fixed and the other perks.

    *I did say almost ;)

To answer your question - I dont know, I would have presumed they are normal pings to get; my sis is playing Enemy Territory right now and to a German server she gets 45-55ms pings and I'm browsing at the same time and pings to Boards.ie are still ok -->

Boards.ie is a local server the pings really should be very low and not in the 30ms range, like they are for you:dunno:, maybe its my router?.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,806 ✭✭✭Xcellor

    maybe its my router?

What router do you have? I got the one IOL BB shipped with, Zytel 630 Prestige I think off the top of my head.

Yeah I know boards.ie is local. Are you living on their doorstep though?

I'm in Longford what area are you? And where are boards.ie hosted, in Dublin?

those pings look like esatbt business pings at least the boards.ie ones do. Your very lucky to get those pings if on iol broadband, most peeps on eircom/iol/netsource get 25ms to boards and 35ms to jolt. Most be a really good router:)

My connection went again at 9:30 ish last night & didnt come back. Rang a couple of times today as I had requested a line test a couple of days ago due to fluctuating D/L speeds. Got a call from UTV just now (4:30 pm) to say the line checked out OK. My connection still down though, UTV suggested changing username and P/W and bingo up she came...I really dont know whats going on. D/L speeds still a bit up and down though.......

Anyone else have this type of problem?

The username and p/w problem has been a known issue with Clicksilver for some time now.

I don't know if this is of interest to anyone here, but this is the relevant extract from my firewall logs since midnight on Patrick's Day. I'm on Clicksilver, on the 282 exchange in Bray:

    18 March

03:40:59 smoothwall PPP has gone down on ppp0 2 Seconds
03:41:01 smoothwall PPP has gone up on ppp0
11:23:10 smoothwall PPP has gone down on ppp0 5 Seconds
11:23:15 smoothwall PPP has gone up on ppp0
16:46:43 smoothwall PPP has gone down on ppp0 5 Seconds
16:46:48 smoothwall PPP has gone up on ppp0
17:01:52 smoothwall PPP has gone down on ppp0 5 Seconds
17:01:57 smoothwall PPP has gone up on ppp0
17:17:56 smoothwall PPP has gone down on ppp0 4 Seconds
17:18:00 smoothwall PPP has gone up on ppp0
17:26:44 smoothwall PPP has gone down on ppp0 8 Seconds
17:26:52 smoothwall PPP has gone up on ppp0
18:05:53 smoothwall PPP has gone down on ppp0 10 Seconds
18:06:03 smoothwall PPP has gone up on ppp0
18:29:12 smoothwall PPP has gone down on ppp0 3 Minutes 6 Seconds
18:32:18 smoothwall PPP has gone up on ppp0
19:15:30 smoothwall PPP has gone down on ppp0 41 Seconds
19:16:11 smoothwall PPP has gone up on ppp0
19:55:13 smoothwall PPP has gone down on ppp0 5 Minutes 13 Seconds
20:00:26 smoothwall PPP has gone up on ppp0
21:44:05 smoothwall PPP has gone down on ppp0 4 Minutes 2 Seconds
21:48:07 smoothwall PPP has gone up on ppp0

    19 March

14:36:29 smoothwall PPP has gone down on ppp0 3 Seconds
14:36:32 smoothwall PPP has gone up on ppp0

The firewall reconnects automatically, so my total downtime yesterday was just under 14 minutes, the worst hits being 5 minutes at 19.55 and 4 minutes at 21.44. It seems I've done better than a lot of you, but this is typical of my experience with UTV - I've had no complaints so far.

I'm using the same router ando - but I'm in Dublin so maybe that may affect other ppl pings if they are outside Dublin; to jolt I used to get 29ms but now I'm getting 31ms since the Black Thursday (yesterday :D ) incident. So maybe its being Dublin that makes a diff?.

</edit> I'm on IOLBB by the way.

If you posted traceroutes, rather than pings, you might be able to tell.

How is a router supposed to improve your ping???

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 16,940 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

different modems/routers give different ping results on same connection altho this was more of an issue for dialup/isdn.

That would mean the biggest cause of a bad ping would be the delay in your modem/router and not in the network...

Was surfing about 2am last night, friday. Got disconnected, tried a few times to reconnect but couldn't. Tried today, still down. Been trying at different times during the day, still no luck.

Called ClickSilver Support about 16:15, after 12 minutes waiting, getting a message telling me to please wait an operator will be with you soon. Was abouut to give up then the phone started ringing at the other end. Got standard answer to my question, its an external problem and there are engineers looking at it at the moment. Couldnt give me any more info apart from try it again later, I know its not the poor girl who is probably under pressure from loads of complaints today, but more info would be good.

Now I'm on the bloddy eircom dialup to check the groups. I've only had broadband about 12 days, migrated from utv's friasco, which I never had a problem with. Now 2 times in 1 weeks no broadband. Hope utv are going to refund 2 days of 'Always On Broadband', which today is not on :p, but i Know the answer before I ask it. They should take some responsibility, I'm paying them for the broadband service, not the eircom engineers.

Anyway, lets hope its back soon.

Router's would give (at absolute most) about 2ms gain in ping. Connecting a router through ethernet will typically add 0.00001ms to your ping, nothing worth talking about.

Line quality and the network your connecting too is what really decides what pings you get,

Its absolutely ridiculous that people should have to hang on so long for support to answer - when there are ongoing problems there should be a taped message giving full details of what is known to UTV. That would save their customers time and take some of the pressure off support.

God knows if NTL can manage that for their TV service surely UTV can do it?

It would also seem reasonable that UTV and the other ISP's could give an update either on Boards or on their websites when there are problems - it would hardly take more than a couple of minutes to do?

Anybody know if any of the other ISP's are having problems today?
