    Hi all,

Anyone here about the sad demise of Donal Dineens Here Comes the Night on Today FM.

Some arsehole in Today Fm decided to cut the long running show and presumably replace it with some pop ****e.

The last show was 17th March, 7 years to the the day after it started on Radio Ireland.

Anyone have any news on where Donal is now or where he is going.

    Dad Rock, HCTN.... Petsounds next?

    Rgds,
    Fred

I listened to the last show and could not believing what i was hearing. He played for an extra hour (until 2am), and he played some tracks from sessions over the years. (Daniel Lanois & David Gray) It's such a shame, it really was a brilliant radio show, in my opinion, the best to be heard in Ireland. I was hoping he was just going on a career break or something, but since you've posted this that's obviously not the case.

I thought it was just changing format or time or name.

Thats a shame, I was an irregular listener, but I thought it was a great show.

The one song thats stands out for me over the 7 years is Koop, "in a heartbeat".

That's a real pity, it was ironic that the commercial broadcaster managed to be more experimental and niche-listening than the "public service" broadcaster. Still, if it's on after Pet Sounds, the replacement probably won't be aimed at the bubblegum-pop market. I was another irregular listener, but I always enjoyed it.

Its unbelievable... I've found so much music over the years from that and the Headphones hour.. and I personally blame it for making me splash out nearly a grand on a headphone setup :)

Theres just so many topnotch artists I've come across solely down to Donal Dineen, and its stretched my listening so much: Mum, Casino Vs. Japan, Ulrich Schnauss, Glenn Branca, Four Tet, Mirah, Beth Gibbons (Out Of Season got so much play at the time), RJD2 (and a host of other Def Jux stablemates)... along with a host of other countless laid-back jazz, electronic and indie acts.. it will be sorely missed.

As far as the new show goes, I've only managed to listen to it two or three times in the car by chance, and I'm not very impressed at all... don't expect any jazz or electronica... looks like its blues, folk, americana and indie all the way.

Donal Dineen is not leaving Today FM, as he said himself, he will return with another show from April 5th at a new start time of midnight, playing the same stuff as HCTN I guess?

I don't know what/who they are going to put in the old Dineen slot of 10pm, but I guess it will be an indie show to compete with RTE 2FM. At the moment there is a girl(dont know her name) filling in.

    I'm proberly to blame! ;)

I used to listen alot to Donal Dineen, but as he started playing more and more glitchy electronica and bed-sit tunes I stopped listening. Bring back all those swinging 60-70s latin/funk/soul tunes!

    Mike.
