The PCs in my college all only allow you limited access when you logon. this means if you download some thing like divx you won't be able to install it once it's downloaded. Is there any way or any program that will allow you to get around this? The reason i ask is i think i saw a public PC where some one had been able to d/l and install things like mirc and stuff.

Any help would be appreciated so I can put the colleges bandwidth to good use:)

You need to get Admin on these machines, there are a number of ways the best would be using NT Password from a linux bootable CD,

Prob won't work as most sysadmins will have removable media booting disabled & the BIOS password protected. Gets even more difficult if you're on an Active Directory domain as the group policies are server side.

As more people do stuff like this, there is a greater temptation to divert part of the budget from Hardware to Software, eg Ghost / Firewalls / Mngt utils / Porn filters - not to mentioning more sites being restricted and the waste of time where Admins are plugging holes rather than adding features.

But then again you probably don't care as long as you have your fun.

Check the acceptable usage policy ...

Anyway if you don't know what you are doing you will get caught rotten.

It's not possible to get around these security measures in Windows 2000.

They probably have the workstation locked down with Group Policy, and have restricted access to the System32 folder and registry to admins only.

mIRC doesn't require any file sin the System32 directory, that's probably how that other person got it to work - just extracting it to a folder on the desktop is enough.

Try find programs that don't rely on any files other than what is in its folder.

Horsefumbler, PM us your email address and I'll send you a little prog which might do the trick. It works on 99% of 2000 and XP machines at work. Feel free to scan it for viruses - I'd hate for someone to say I was trying to infect you with something.

Alternatively, if you can boot off a CD, get yourself a copy of ERD Commander and give yourself local admin rights, or add an innocent-looking local account...

And ColmOT [MSFT], it's very easy to get around Windows' tight  security if you use a bit of lateral thinking.

Just ask an admin for his password...

    It is what it's.
