RTE NEWS - Minister of Justice says the US protecting Bush will be able to kill people in Ireland, if THEY deem it necessary.

It's not very clear if they will have immunity, but it's most likely they will.

they have only one agenda - protect Bush - jesus they are worse than robocop.
That means that if i run towards bush to give him a big hug (don't make me sick) they would probably take me out (not to an expensive meal)

they shoot first and deal with the consequences later.

Unless you are intending to assinate George Bush, I do not see the problem. Should the secret service wait until George Bush is dead before opening fire?

The problem is that unlike Americans we are not used to being around Gardai with Loaded guns and itchy trigger fingers!
Personally i dont care what happens to him while hes here so long as irish civilians are not hurt!

That wouldn't be in keeping with the standard "he didn't get shot on my watch" attitude.

Even better that allowing the security officers to use weapons we're probably giving them diplomatic immunity too.

You recall what happened during the May Day march with our own Gardaí.
    They only had batons!
    These f*ckers have guns!
    Its absolute bullsh*t!

Why the hell is he coming anyway?

    to get the irish-american vote

    fat chance...

    He's coming for two reasons:

    1) It's a US - EU summit (not US - Ireland) so Bush is here to try to repair some diplomatic relations with the main EU countries.

    2) It looks good on TV in a re-relection year.

The only real plus of this visit in my eyes is that the government (neé FF) will take a lot of flak over it.

Aside from that this country is waist deep in American investment/industry that we want to protect.

If we tell bush to get lost they'll label us like the french and stop importing guinness!
    Seriously tho.
    Whens he coming?

The investment will stay - they get tax breaks, educated workforce, english speaking, close proximity to US and europe....that is a scare tatic used by FF - we owe US companies nothing, we have made them very rich.

    - im not unapreciative i work for one of them - i just don't feel the need to bow at the door when i walk in

What happens if said egg throwing person fills the egg with ricin
    or anthrax spores?

No-one will get within throwing distance of georgie. i reckon it will be a half mile radius at least.

Anyone who attempts such a stupid thing should expect nothing less, to disgrace a national leader like that deserves a lengthy jail sentence, the woman who did it to bertie shouldve gotten locked up its not so long (maybe 150-200 years) ago that if you did something like that you wouldve been executed.

Fair enough execution is extreme but basically you are throwing an egg in americas face, protestors must learn to make distinction between george bush the so called "warmonger" and george bush the representative of the people of the united states of america.

Hopefully none of you nutters get this close, because it will be a sad day when you end up dead for your beliefs.

They wont get immunity, they will be responsible for their actions if they DO shoot someone. however what do you expect, there are more armed (and trained to use arms) cops in the UK than the handful trained to use them here, thats why the UK could say no, but why we have to grant them the freedom to shoot to protect his life. But the agent who gets it wrong will be hung drawn and quartered by the media and people here, and the irish american voters will turn their backs on old george.

I definitely agree that it's not a huge factor in keeping the big multi-nationals (one of whom I work for also) here but it is still worthwhile keeping up appearances anyway.

    Jeez lads...

with such over-reactions, its no wonder that so many valid complaints get dismissed as being "more of the same".

In any event, the Secret Service are a trained and experience security group and will not do anything stupid. They'll be as worried about causing an international incident as anyone else. If it comes down to in though, they won't hesitate for two seconds before firing if they feel the need.

Bush will be kept distant from the crowds most of the time but will no doubt want to get up close and personal for the "money shot" of him meeting the people.

TBH, I don't really care whether he visits Ireland or not, it's just interesting to see all the hassle it will cause.

I don’t really have any time for Bush myself. TBH I would prefer if he stayed away. But I have to say I think some peoples reaction here is a little silly. Do any of you know anything about the Secret Service? These guys are professionals. They protect people for a living. They are amongst the most highly trained Close Protection Specialists on the planet. They do not shoot people willy nilly. Should someone be idiotic enough to try to attack G Dubya this will not necessarily result in them dying in a hail of lead. Can you imagine the backlash if these guys shot everyone that tried to approach the great man or any of the dozens of other people these guys protect.

I don’t have any figures but I would presume the number of people shot by the secret service is quite low. Make no mistake, if they don’t like the look of you they will not hesitate to take you down (in a non-lethal way.) From the reactions here you would think that their standard operating procedure was to cut a path through protesters with automatic weapons.

    MrP

yeah its bad but its nothin new!
Like when clinton came he has same style security, They did lift man holes everywhere to check for bombs.
Same when eminem came, his men didn't hand in guns to gardai and they spend a whole day trying to catch them before they put a cap in somebodies ass.

I think we should be more worried that he is coming and not how/when he is !
