    which is better to host a "brochure style" web site

    - unix
    - windows

    Also, why is unix cheaper?

    Unix is cheaper due to the fact its an opensource free software while you have to pay for licencing on Windows,On a Brochure site it wouldn't make much of a difference which platform you went for you would only opt for windows if you have ASP pages or an access database.

    First up, there is no "better". If the first thing you look at is "which operating system" then you've gone too far already.
    Work out what you want to do, how best to do it, and based on that choose your operating system and support applications. Your choices should also cover what you know. There is little sense in learning how to administer FreeBSD for a mission critical server if apache on windows 2000 will do the same thing and you know what youre doing.

    The cheapness of Unix depends on a lot of things. There is no one Unix, and those that are certified Unix have typically paid The Open Group wads of cash for the right to call their operating system Unix. So what you're referring to are "unix-like" operating systems, like Linux and Net/Open/FreeBSD which are free. Solaris, a certified Unix, is free but with limitations (no, I can't remember what. Free for a single x86 processor machine for non-commercial use or somesuch)

    Yeh, dredg hit the button on that one.

    What features do you need? And which O/S can provide you with those. If you're in doubt then maybe talk to one or two hosting companies about your options and see what fits the bill better.
