Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Private vs Public transport

    I recently posted this in the politics forum but I got no bites. Apologies if you've already read it and thought it was a brutal topic, but I think it merits debate and would look to guage opinion out there.

    are we missing the point?

    The way I see it, the major point in the whole public/private transport row is being missed because of this row between SIPTU/NBRU and the Govt.

    IMO private transport companies can not be relied upon to provide a reliable, safe and efficent transport system. Opening up the bus system will result in companies cherry picking the better routes, losing revenue for Dublin Bus. At the same time Dublin Bus would be expected to maintain, if not improve service on other routes. This would mean that the subsidy they need would actually increase at a cost to the exchequer or users of public transport.

    I have heard that the subsidy that the British Governement pays out to Railtrack annually is now greater (relatively speaking) than when they were running it themselves. All the while the company is cutting back on safety measures and is notouriously unreliable and is no where near as answerable to the UK Govt. as it once would have been.

    So are we missing the point? Can public/private transport work? And are the unions focusing on the wrong issue - is even their role?
