Okay I just got my ethernet connection up and running

The noise level is fine, but most of the information are static settings and thus not relative in comparison to "x" amount.

    Hi,

If you are just trying to figure out if your speed is ok, try downloading from some sites.

First try something from your own ISP's site. Failing that, try something Irish like http://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/ftp.mandrake.com/Mandrake-iso/i586/ - pick one of the big iso's and leave it a few minutes to see your transfer rate. Then try something American like http://www.giganews.com/comps/test_connect.mhtml - pick either the 40 or 60 server.

I have a 512Kb connection and my best numbers are around 60KB for Heanet and around 480 Kbps for Giga, which are more than acceptable.

    Hope that helps,
    Colm

    I get 436kbps from Giganews...meaning?, i've got a ****ty connection??

Not really! I've had giga figures in the two digits when my connection was bad:(

Personally, I would say anything above 400 is fine given that that is within approx 80% of the theoretical max. And of course there could be a 1000 reason's why you get a lower figure - contention, internet congestion, probs with the giga server. Thats why its useful to do the Heanet one or even better your own ISP as it eliminates general internet issues. That would leave you with either contention or ****ty connection.

If you are consistently getting bad downloads from your own ISP that it probably ain't contention. You then need to look at how far away you are from the exchange (for dsl) - you may be one of those people who are on the cusp of the DSL reach and for whom it is know the service will be degraded. And so on...

Basically I'd be more than happy if I consistently got 436 from giga :)

no, 436 is fine, I presume your on radsl, i get 434 im on eircom radsl and seeing as thats an american server thats around the best you'll get on a 512k radsl connection in Ireland anyway. 512k real ADSL and good wireless isps would give a higher better figure than radsl.

Is there a file i can download from IOLBB or Eircom or UTVIP?
Just so we could test speeds.....

I am also wondering does speed degrade over time?, like copper wire degrade and stuff like that?

Distance, before the fiasco with the Esat server last Thursday my speeds were constant at 52-54K downstream. Now it's all over the shop....it's gotta be Esat.

    Damn them to hell

I did some downloading of er stuff....and was getting about 48-51 kps. Which is good enough. Though some files were only at 8-10 kbs I guess it depends on the server....

Is there a programme to measure the ammount of data I've transfered? I have'nt a clue whether 8gb (on Clicksilver) will be enough or eaten up in a mad weekend!

Im on Eircom Radsl in Galway, usually when i start a download i always get a really high speed to start with (130KB+) this normally last 3-5 seconds, but for the last 2-3 months it lasts for about 1-3 minutes before slowly dropping back down to 50-60KB. This means when im downloading something small (<6MB) i usually have it downloaded before it settle's? its soooo sweet. I just hope it lasts!

anyone else lucky enough to have this?

    Sean

rabbitinlights: What you are probably seeing is a bug in Internet explorer.

When you click on a download, IE starts downloading it in the background, so when you finally choose the place you want to save it too, it has already downloaded 500kb's of the file, and then it thinks you are downloading at extremely fast speeds. But in reality, you are only downloading at 60kb/sec.

Really?, That sound about right if it was a second or two, but nearly 2 min? Ill keep an eye on it, but it just seems to keep that speed way after i select where to download it to, i actually have a 2GB partition that i use to DL everything to before i move it to where i want it, so its not as if i take ages to select it?

    Im Not complaining though!
