There is nothing more I would like to do than eat the head off Esat IOL BT whatever they call themselves... but presently I can't coz there isnt anything to complain about.. Sub 30 pings to boards... 50+kB/ps. No downtime.

You could call me a satisfied customer... Although I'm a bit concerned if I say that it might go terribly wrong...

It's not...why?, i am currently downloading as i type the Far Cry demo, 551 megs...my speed is constant at 51.1K downstream, not bad at all.

But last night i could not login, username/password refused...took 2 hours for it to accept, then ALL Microsoft websites were gone. MSN was the same.

It just seems to me that there is some issue with a server or some exchanges, do you guys remember around July last year, remember when we had problems downloading web pages?

It seems to be that issue again, did someone say it was backhaul at the exchanges?

Haven't been able to connect since my last post ~50mins ago... still laggy and slow.
    So...ring and complain!!

Only way things get fixed is make them aware and cause a stir.
Yeah I tried to ring them up on Sunday, but the lines were closed, and I'm not exactly thrilled at the prospect of waiting a half hour on hold before I get to speak with someone who doesn't know whats going on.
    Anyone moaned at comreg?

Cannot get on either in Cork.

Isnt it great that the company for which are we customers do not have the balls to let us know what is actually going on?

Do they think, emm maybe they wont notice???!
Silence from our supplier is bad.

Anyone got an inside track as to what is going on?

I'm ping pretty high too. It's strange, I can download reasonably fast but ping like crap. Packet loss ain't a problem either.

I use IOLBB for gaming mainly. I can't play CoD with high pings...I think I'll fire up HaloPC.

Suddenly back to normal for me. I figure it was people milking their caps slowing it down, for me anyways. Back to pinging boards.ie at 27ms instead of 190 odd!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 91 ✭✭Unexpected

My pings are 27 to boards too. But it still is a load of bollox opening web pages and downloading...dont even go there.

If nobody in Esat actually knows what the problem is then I guess we can look forward to this being the norm. I wish Eircom didnt sabotage competitors :/

Can you prove that Eircom are sabotaging their competitors? If you cannot stop making wild alleagations. They take the heat off (in this case anyways) UTV and IOL.
If you can prove it they by all means post the evidence and let the companies concerned take it to the regulator.

I am no fan of eircom by the way but wild allegations do not help clarify what is going on. And in this case it appears to have been equipment shared somewhere along the line by UTV/Esat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,468 ✭✭✭Lex_Diamonds

I have no direct proof regarding this, only eircoms previous track record over the years. It would seem the most likely explanation though, seeing as not a single Eircom customer is affected.

I'm on the Nutley exchange too ... My pings are great, sub 40ms to boards.ie. I was gaming online last night and ping was great. I tried to visit www.boards.ie last night, and it must have taken 10 minutes to load.

The problem for me is only web based. Download speeds are fine over ports other than 80. A really strange problem.

The rumour is that a piece of equipment that is owned and maintained by IOL, but shared by UTV, failed and is causing the poor performance of IOL's Broadband. I don't think it has anything to do with Eircom in this case.

Sligo exchange, pinging most servers at 160ish...what a joke this service is.

This is getting to be a complete joke now. Connection dropped a few minutes ago when it reconnected seems last nites ping are here again.

Getting an amazing 5kB/s now. Fantastic. I received a 2nd email from IOL today from Home Support (i think) basically a copy and paste of the last mail . I replied asking about the appalling ping times we are receiving.

If you have no direct proof then you should not make wild allegations. Have you any evidence of Eircom ever sabotaging anyones service over the years? There is an explanation in the thread as to why Eircoms customers do not appear to be affected.

I think to get the problems sorted out we need focus on the causes and as I keep saying wild allegations which people are only too ready to accept do not help.

I emailed customer care asking about the terrible speeds (this was before mine picked up again):
    Dear Customer,

Thank you for contacting Esat BT Residential Technical Support.

Getting speeds slower than a dial-up connection is possible with Broadband.
This is due to a contention ratio of 24:1 on the service. What this means is
that you could be sharing the same DSL line with 24 other users in your
area. If any or all of these users are online at the same time as you your
connection speeds will drop. How much depends on the number of users online
at that time. This is stated in the Terms & Conditions of the service.

If you require further support on this matter please reply to this mail or
contact Esat BT Residential Technical Support on

1890 923 111 - IOL Anytime, IOL Gold, No Limits, NetSmart and IOL Broadband

    1550 923 555 - IOL Free, Oceanfree.net and Esatclear PAYU

    Regards,

    Internet Technical Support
    Esat BT

Ive had alot of problems, i mainly game and ive noticed that pings are up around 100-200 and its annoying as hell. One of my mates rang them and was put on hold for an hour he ended up just getting sick of waiting and hung up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 793 ✭✭✭Kegser

    Mine is ****ed also.

Everyone ring them and complain, that's the only way they'll become aware of how widespread the problem is.

That is of course assuming they don't know already; but it's better to be sure. I'm ringing them as I type this.
