I witnessed high pings for the first time last night. They were consistent (190 - 200) and downloads and the web were actually working fine for me. This is a reversal of what I normally experience.

It's about time that we got an answer from IOL about what's happening. The whole "Yeah, there is a problem, but we don't know what it is. Engineers are working on it" harks back to my Irish Broadband days. The service never improved and eventually lost my, and many others, custom. This is the trend IOL are likely to follow if this continues.

I'll compose a mail and see if anyone wants to answer me :)

I was on to tech support last night and i got the whole... its your contention ratio crapola.

even after explaining to them that other ppl i know in different areas of dublin have been experiencing the exact same problems since wednesday.

im gonna send off a mail now too.

Things have improved for me today, was very poor upto midnight last night. Once again i got a call from Esat. It's concrete now...it is not contention, it's a sever issue located on the Esat side of the network.

It is effecting certain severs in certain exhanges, throughout the country. The problem is more widespread then they first thought. It is also having a "domino effect"....meaning the problem is cumlative and getting worse over time.

All this info is from Esat, engineers are working to resolve the issues at each sever and local exchange.

They still can't give a time frame for normal resumption of service, and they are also considering getting another engineering firm to do the contract work for them.

It seems that Esat don't have faith in the contract engineers they currently work with, Esat admit it's effecting alot of people country wide.

IOLBB was ine all day, then it cuts me o, reconnects, and I'm pinging at 200ish...

What a great service this is.

That is because you could be one of the lucky one's on a server within an exchange that has not been effected. But if the problems bubbles you could be.

exactly the same thing happened me.

I'm just off the phone, a supervisor will ring me with an answer to my problem before end of business.

Shall I hold my breath? :)

wow ... replied in less than 10 minutes! i'm impressed! :)

Ok, first things first, he said that there's a problem between eircom's and IOL's servers, and that there's currently a team of engineers working on the problem. They've given a time of TWO WEEKS before the problem is completely resolved.

    Oh
    My
    ****ing
    God

Secondly, I asked him about the daily disconnections from IOL Broadband, which is supposedly an "Always On" service. He stated that it's in the ToC and I said that I hadn't read anything about daily disconnections in it. I was put on hold while he consulted with "second level"

Apparantly, the DSL line is permanently connected, thereby getting them out of any legal loopholes as the connection is "Always On". But the actual broadband connection is terminated at 3am every single morning so as to reassign everyone a new ip address. How nice of them, considering any large downloads that I want to do would naturally be left over night - but what's the point if it's being cut off half way through?! Ridiculous - really ****ing terrible.

Anyway, 2weeks before we're back to "normal" activity on BB. isn't Ireland just great?

They don't...that's the kicker...no one at Esat networking has a clue nor can they trace the problem.

Which is why Esat are considering giving their network contract to another company.

Thanks for that info Rich - at least they are working on it and not ignoring the problem. Shame IOL couldn't be arsed relaying the info to their customers. Bunch of morans running that company - my speeds are fine at the moment but once it hits 7pm is the real test.

We regret to hear you are experiencing difficulties. Getting speeds slower than a dial-up connection is possible with Broadband. This is due to a contention ratio of 48:1 on the service or 24:1 for Broadband Plus.
What this means is that you could be sharing the same DSL line with 47 other users in your area or 23 in the case of broadband plus. If any or all of these users are online at the same time as you your connection speeds will drop. How much depends on <tripe chopped>
I got this very same bullshit stock reply, nice to see that they REALLY DO CARE... very tempted to cancel my direct debit and let them f#cking well sing for it.

At around 6.30pm everything seemed fine. So I started playing Call of Duty from about 7.30 and my pings kept jumping between 60-170. One minute everything is fine, the next I was lagging all over the place. I can't play like this.

Everything was fine untill this week. The IOL Annoucement board says there will be\was an outage on Sunday 28/04/04 for maintenance. If they got the date wrong I wouldn't be surprised if they screwed the network up too.

These pings were one second apart and look at the difference.

Can d/l files at solid 53KB/sec but pings and web browsing are shot to sh1te.

It's gotta be a proxy/routing/DNS issue somewhere, doesn't it? I noticed (as most of you probably have) that IOL have switched DNS servers, can anything be drawn from that? Used to be 194.125.2.240/241 but is now 192.111.39.1/4.

/me poos in a box and sends it to IOL with note attached: "Here's your connection back"

Typical good job on your part for getting a good reply. Seems like they're not telling anyone else this though.

TWO WEEKS though!? Come on. They need a big switch that says "UNDO".

The contention trollop they're telling everyone else is absolute rubbish. Are they seriously trying to tell us that on Wednesday they switched on 47/23 other connections in my area cause I've never had a problem other than that.

When I first found out about the problem on Wednesday downloads were gone too. I tried downloading McAfee Dats only to find my speed was 0.02% of DIAL-UP. Now that's quite obviously a server problem. I'm not even gonna bother working out how many people it would take to cut my download speeds to 117bytes/second. That cleared up pretty quickly.

I don't know what the hell the problem is but I've a feeling they're shifting it around the place. Different people seem to be ok at different times. I had perfect pings this morning then everything died. When it was back lo and behold high 190s.

Infuriating. That's the only word I can use for it.

This is really starting to annoy me, the pings have been fine up until 2 o'clock then the pings are steadily at about 190 when i try to play online.

Tbh i think people should refuse to pay for their broadband with esat up until its fixed and pings are normal again.
