Some nice person has whacked the boot of my 3-Series BMW leaving a big dint and peeling paint on the edge. I could go to an official BMW dealer to have it fixed for a king's ransom but I was wondering if anyone could recommend an independent body repair shop that could do the job for a reasonable price.

Will there we any problems getting the correct paint?

BTW I live on Dublin's northside.

I used to get Metro Motors to do all the work on my 320i - they do all the repair work for Bradys in Castleknock which is a main Merc dealer - they're reasonably priced and the work is top notch... they're in ashtown...dublin 7

I recently had a run in with one of those black cast iron bollards, and gave my rear wheel arch a good going over (98 318). i got a couple of prices from back street merchants, which i thought a bit pricey. I then called into Murphy & Gunn's body shop in Rathgar, to get a benchmark price, to compare the others to. Much to my surprise, they were the cheapest, and the work was top notch. They took the car for 48hrs, and supplied a replacement for 30 euro a day.

I was pleasantly surprised, and happy that the work was done by a main dealer. While many independent panel beaters are very good, there are a few cowboys.

You sure they did it themselves? My experience is that it is usually outsourced to a third party specialist company

Yes. They have one body shop for all their garages, but it's definitely part of the conpany.

I finally got a quote from Joe Duffy (BMW dealer) today: Labour €600, Paint €120, VAT €97.20 - Total €817.20. I thought they were having a laugh.

I then went to Finglas Crash Repairs a few doors away and they quoted me €250 - much better. I think it will be worthwhile to get a couple more quotes before I decide.

I tried to get them to quote for an MTec kit fitted and sprayed a while back, and they could only supply - they said they could put me in contact with a bodyshop who did work for them though...very few garages have their own body shop in my experience

And Joe Duffys never had their own bodyshop - at least not up until they moved premise... they do however know exactly how to charge, €817 is a joke

Had a bang in a 3 series I used to have. Heard of a a guy called Gavin Mulroy who is a BMW specialist working for himself. He fixed it up at a fraction of the cost I was quoted elsewhere.

    Call him on 087 2662098

He was so good I continued using him for all servicing etc after my bang 'til I got rid of the car.
