    Hi

apart from IOL being down most of yesterday are any of you having problems just with email..

This started for me on Monday Night..and since then I cant send or receive emails.

I've tried everything and double and treble checked settings....Web itself came back overnight but email is still not working.

someone mentioned a change in the address of the DNS server... could that impact email ?

any help appreciated.. Fraid I havnt the time or patienceto call IOL Tech support

    Woody

Ps how do you go about getting your bill reduced for the days there was no service.. in the days I was with eircom they had a customer charter of some sort. and it had rules for credits.. do IOL have anything similar....I mean if you hired a car for the month and it was broken down and unusable for 3 or 4 days out of the month you wouldnt pay the full charge...

IOL was down for me in D15 - yet my friend in Blanch was able to connect. (this was at 8.30pm)

its a disgrace that this sort of thing is happening. Its not fun paying for a service you don't get.

It's still down where I am in the western 'burbs. And after 10 mins on hold last night, yer man tells me to re-install the drivers - for an Ethernet modem! - as a solution. Also claimed no one else had complained about down time.

Bloody comedians. Maybe their ESB bill payment got stuck in the post?

    An answer to previous Q....
IOL's DNS servers dont change when you connect, your IP does. they have static DNS servers. And yes, if there was a DNS problem or migration last night, then we would see what we say.

In my opinion, its not a physical routing issue (i.e. Eircom) but an internal issue near the last stage of negotiating PPP with IOL. You dont get an IP address, it cannot assign you one. Its called a peer abort. IOL's side disconnects you as it cannot completely start the PPP session. You can test this by dumping in a wrong user/pass and if you get an authorisation failure, you know everything works as far as IOL's BSN. Whats behind the BSN is the issue.

I do see SOME updates from IOL BB on boards.iol.ie about expected outages, actually 2 in the last 4 months only. They should also make notifications about unexpected outages and some detail and who is affected should complement the anouncement. Makes me ponder the management quality and customer disclosure policy at IOL/Esat being honest.

If they dont look after their customers, someone else will.

I had trouble sending mail using the oceanfree.net mail server. I was getting a 'no relaying' error. Strange since I thought they were all part of the same company and has worked fine till yesterday. I changed my smtp server to mail2.eircom.net and all was ok.

This raises the question what mail servers work with IOLBB?

Just to let you know that there are similar issues with some UTV customers. It seems to arise when people are trying to access non UTV email accounts.

So if anyone is having similar difficuties dont adjust your settings it is obviously an issue with some of the equipment that they share. For anyone in urgent need of their mail dont forget some webmail sites like yahoo allow you to assess other accounts so that might help you temporarily.

    Hi

I also had the same problem last night.
I called IOL at 7pm last night to see what was wrong i was on hold for 45min. I had the phone on loud speaker and watched the TV while on hold.

Any way after 45 min I was told there was a problem and everybody was affected. He was unsure of the exact problem. I asked why they did not have a front end message saying someting so you did not have to hold for ages. He said the they could not do that or it would kick people in the que off when they made the change. Theat is Sh!t and if not, for a telecom's company they must be using some crap Call center software.

Exactly what I was thinking. FFS, you call ESB if there's a power-cut and they almost instantly have a recording stating that there is, indeed, an issue, which area(s) are affected, roughly when it started, what and where the cause is and its severity (if known) and also a guestimate of when it's expected to be resolved.

Call IOL - a telecommunications company - (1800923111), get told to call 1904, then told to call 1891923111, if you're calling for BB, NS etc please hold, 'cept you can't 'cos it cuts you off after a minute. Many retries later you finally get rung through, and a thank you for waiting bla bla, with a mix of crappy music varying from whispers to short loud bursts and then silence so you dunno if you're still in the queue.

Contract? They're not providing the level of service for which people are paying, and they are in breach. Any nullification of said contract by a customer would in my opinion be completely valid.

    :dunno:

    It is what it's.

Marvellous! I just ordered IOLBB yesterday!!

What's the story with the contract, do you actually sign one? I seem to remember people saying a contract was never sent out to them to sign. I don't want to sign a contract for a year while the service is like this.

I thought I was just being paranoid! Sabotage to get IOLBB/UTV customers to change over? You decide!

Constant wild claims like this do not help the overall situation. I am no fan of Eircom by any means but I have never seen even the smallest piece of evidence here of any such sabotage. If anyone has such evidence then it would be helpful for all concerned to report it to the Regulator. Making wild claims about Eircom muddies the water and takes the heat off IOL and UTV.

In this case it seems that a piece of equipment on the Esat network which UTV also use failed and that has generated a lot of the problems. If you read other threads here you will see customers of both services reporting very similar problems.

In the fallout from the equipment failure both UTV and IOL have been very good at sabotaging their own reputations particularly by appalling communications with their customers as reported so frequently here. They did not need any assistance from Eircom at all:rolleyes:

Yes, yes, me too, IOL customer also paying for nothing.

    Notice something?
    C:\WINDOWS\system32>nslookup www.boards.ie

    Server: ns.isi.ie
    Address: 192.111.39.1

    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: www.boards.ie
    Address: 82.195.131.128

ns.isi.ie as a DNS server? who are they? Also getting woeful latency.

Can someone raise this with Garth O'Callaghan on 2fm tomorrow?
Someone know someone to push this one?

    J.

    Seems to be improving though.

Tried to download McAfee dat file a few minutes ago and it was 0.02% of dial-up speeds (100-130 BYTES/sec) :(

Up to 14 kbps now. It's become usable at least!

same problems being experienced here, surfing becoming almost impossible as pages are taking an age to load

Hopefully this isn't going to become a trend for IOL

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,243 ✭✭✭zoro

i haven't noticed any problems with downloading anything .. it's just the pings that have rocketed!

earlier the downloads were **** (max of 12K/s), but they seem to have stablised at around 30K now so it's not all that bad
