How much free speech is allowed even in a private forum ?

Should people be allowed to joke about anything and everything given its a private forum ? Or discuss everything and anything, nothing is taboo ?

I did not name the person or the forum here in this thread. I asked and got my access to the forum removed.

My issue is not with *that* forum or that particular subject but with the rules for all private forums. What can and cannot be allowed.

the post was made in keeping with the charter of the forum, i see no reason remove it.

I edited the initial post to remove anything specific. I let my emotions get to me when I posted when I should have just gone for a walk.

I'd appreciate if everyone else change their posts too to reflect this.

If the forum is requested and created on the premise that anything, no matter how controversial, goes, then I see that there is no issue here.

As for making fun, well that's a different issue, that comes down to the judgement of the moderator(s) in charge of that forum.

In responce to the topic. they are called private forums for a reason.

A few of the forums i have access to have seen threads with bad tasted jokes, complaints, intelligent rants, spam, and also porn.

I once asked why teh need to use a private forum for porn etc, yet i was told by one of the members that it was their right to post porn as well as anything else aslong as it wasn't against the charter.

    actually, their exact words were
Porn is freedom of speech. Linking to porn sites is freedom of speech. I have exercised my right to freedom of speech on this forum numerous times. Bless it.

I know the thread took a dip in a direction that it probably shouldn’t yellum (I just read it now so I'm sure I've missed half of it)
however, don’t just leave the forum like that, you added a lot to it and I believe your presence will be sorely missed.
I agree with you, I’m not sure ‘that’ topic should be discussed in such a way, but it is a private forum and I guess the mod has a right to express his opinion in whatever way he wishes – I also believe that there is a big difference between something in your head and the actual act being carried through, if you understand what I mean.
anyway, all I want to say is, re think the leaving thing
    a

    ps
as for your question, how far should a forum go, well, I really don't care, if there is a thread that doesn't interest me, I just don't read it - hench I missed all this silliness...

Apparently you seem to think that it is acceptable to discuss anything that would not offend you, even though it may offend others, while making taboo those topics that you may find offensive even though others may not.

You can’t have your cake and eat it, yellum.

honestly TC, I think in this instance, any person who thought this particular subject through, would find it offensive, no?

I think everyone who saw the thread would agree that it was possibly a touch too far outside the bounds of taste, even for the dodgier posts around Boards.

I didn’t bother to read the post in question, although I know the subject matter. I'm simply saying that you can't set up a board that's region d'etre is a libertarian approach to content, post lots of stuff that many others would find highly objectionable (e.g. pornography) and then start whining when someone posts something that you would find beyond your boundary of taste. That’s called hypocrisy.

So either define what is acceptable and what is not for it - thus accepting that a libertarian approach to content is flawed - or accept it all.

As I said, you can’t have your cake and eat it.

TC if you haven't read the thread then you cannot fairly comment on it tbh

you might also take back some of your above comments if you had

I've replied to the thread in illuminati ye are talking about.
All we are see'ing here is a genuine reaction to a topic and a posters comment.
And Yellum's reaction definitely is understandable and wouldn't be unique.
Perhaps him coming on here and saying that it shouldn't be allowed is just him getting a taste of where his particular line is drawn.
I wouldn't see it as hypocrisy.
I doubt too that the post he finds offensive was meant in the way that it could have been read....

At least I hope so :)

Now all have a stiff drink relax and see what happens next :)

maybe i shud work for the labour court :p

Obviously I'm not a member of the Illuminati, nor have I had a chance to read the un-edited versions of the first couple of posts here. However, I don't see what the problem is that some ordinary moderation couldn't solve? Surely the process is that if you find something offensive on any forum, you bring that to the attention of the moderator. Then, if they decide that its unreasonable, they remove it, and everybody moves on. Or, they decide that its acceptable, and it stays. What's the difference with this situation?

    jesus, you frickin drama queens.

Its a PRIVATE forum. Sort it out yourselves and stop posting on f/s where the large majority either dont care or cannot access to judge what the hell you are dribbling on about.

It would make no difference to the principle of double standards that I’ve highlighted, weither I had or had not.

I’ve read it now and my comments stand based upon what I’ve already said.

If this thread is to be discussed in an open forum, then i propose that the forum in question be thrown open so we may read it.

This isn't the place to discuss this matter (the broader question perhaps, but that's not what is happening).

For the record, I agree with The Corinthian, but in this case I'd be wary of what "society" thinks about content even on a private forum. Taboos can be hard to keep track of.

To answer the original question, unless the content is something that could put the entire website at risk (in which case its a question for the admins) then the community itself should self-regulate.
