I assume this wont include the Half-LIfe 2 voucher will it? I head that's only for the retail versions?

Also, I know the longer you wait things will drop but with the new PCI cards coming out in april will it not drop further soon?

I do have my credit card inmy hand though ! :)

    That's with the XT cards.

I thought 9800 Pro Retail comes with HL2? However I think that ATI is probably the Lite version and doesnt came with HL2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 900 ✭✭✭cosgrove80

No HL2 then? At least it'll play it.

Still a fine price. Very tempting

Works out at €355 for the ATI 9800 and a Pioneer 107 DVDRW inc P&P

can anyone tell me what the heat and noise is like on these? Also does the card block any adjoining slots?

I'm going to be building a sff rig soon based around a biostar 200n case, was going to go for a 9600XT but at that price might just go for the 9800pro instead, assuming the heat/noise are OK.

    thx

some hecurles 9800pros come with HL2 voucher

these are actually ATI cards not made by a 3rd party manufacturer.

i wonder how long these will last for because the had sparkle 5900's last week and sold out by monday (offers are up thursdays)

9800 pro's only take up one slot so the are suitable for a sff machine, with regards to cooling i've heard of people having overclocked shuttles with 9800's in them so thats cool, not sure about noise though

I put a zalman on mine and after a week the card died. Not 100% sure if it
was the heatsink or if card was faulty....

You need a vent in the sff pc like above or it will get very hot using the standard
    9800 Pro fan.

    same as myself..

i have had the zalman in there pretty much since i got mine and its worked fine so dont know if you made an error in putting it on or what ozmo, that or the card was faulty..

i just know its been great for me with no sound :)

(once you get a system that has no sound coming from the cpu or vga though you start to notice the hdd's and cdrom noises ALOT more :p)

bought a cooldrive 4 though for my main hdd so that i could monitor a good few things in the computer and to keep the system drive cooler so it lasts longer (seems a bit more silent aswell?)

I'm going way off topic here so I'll delete or repost elsewhere if required but:

I'm not entirely sure what to do about the heatsink and fan. My brother built my pc for me ( he's away ) so I'm not sure what's in it.

Where do I look for the heatsink? I know he put a huge fan in ( sounds like a mini hovercraft! ).

Can I test the temperature of my comp etc.

    Thanks

Well the only reason you would change the heatsink is if your looking for a very quiet rig or your going to be overclocking. The standard one is fine for running the card at stock speeds and wont take up one of your PCI slots.

If you want to overclock then the ArticCooler is probably the best one you will find, it has two options silent and normal. On normal i notice the difference straight away, on silent i dont notice it at all. On silent it still performs a big ammount better then the stock cooling, so you have more room for overclocking........ ohh and pretty much no noise comming from it. Zalman is another option, more expensive but its great also (have 1 aswell).

If overclocking or silence isint an issue then dont bother going near the heatsink as you void the warenty by taking it off.

Artic cooler is available www.hitide.ie , along with other products for overclocking/noise reduction.....

Did u have the zalman fan on it too?

It says u NEED this with the 9800 Pro. The heatsink alone is not enough.

    Doh!
I used to have this on a 9700Pro - never needed a fan. i just moved it across -
The 9800 isnt that much more powerful.

Do you have a link where it says you need a fan and what type you need?

The whole idea of the huge heatsink was to get rid of that nasty 9800/9700
thiny whiney fan. There is no pci slot in front on the AGP slot for a artic cooler etc.

Anyone got any good uses for a melted 9800 :|

    here

    look at note 2

if using 9800pro or higher this is reccommended. i have it on my heatsink and it's silent even on normal mode.

    Offer is over :(

Yea, even though there isnt that much of a difference between the 9700pro & 9800pro its advised to use a fan with it  .......... TBH id just go with an artic cooler, on silent it makes the same ammount of noise as the Zalman with its fan (set to silent also).......... which by the way is pretty much silent - you just wont hear it.

ArticCooler is so cheap these days, and great performance wise too good reviews ..... http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=getarticle&number=8&artpage=581&articID=149

PS the retail version of the 9800pro is still available for €203 on www.jes-computer.de for those who mite have missed out!!

I've got a cheiftec windowed side panel with an 80mm fan in it, which keeps my GFX card nice and cool, even when overclocking it. Think this'll help out with the 9800, or should I buy some more mad cooling?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,582 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

offer is over i hope you's all got one

they are now offering antec trueblue 480w for €103.81 exluding delivery.

    another quality product.

they are €131.57 from elara so that's a saving of €30 odd

I think I'll wait til the 9800 EX comes available at a reasonable price.
It has a temp sensor an clocks down if it gets too hot.
