Downloads seem to be coming in at full speed for me, BUT after a few minutes, big downloads (e.g. 328MB) seem to be resetting (after about 20 or 30MB). I'm not sure if this is just the server or UTV, but this was happening on all downloads a while ago before i adjusted the MTU settings. I'm trying to find a different download server to test the connection.....will post results (or delete this bit of the post if it turns out to be the server  )

<edit> yep, it's happening on other servers aswell. both located in the US. </edit>

I've had this problem recently, after 20/30 megs of a large download, get a 'Server has reset' error. Very annoying, especially when you go away for a few hours only to find the damn download has stalled.

Those W@nkers in UTV have just had the cheek to send me a bill for the UTV Clicksilver "service"...

I have been charged for March and April....
Whilst I don't dispute the billing frequency amounts...

I do dispute their rights to charge me ANYTHING given the service I have received since March 18th!
I was thinking I would be receiving compensation FROM them, bot paying them for nothing!

    What do others think?
Has anybody successfully disputed their charges with UTV?

No - only when people take it on themselves to instruct others or 'offer suggestions' which are not invited or indeed welcome. I prefer Mary Poppins to stay in the film or indeed book.

The suggestions weren't even directed to you. I'm really confused as to why you're so upset about me offering advice to someone else.
I prefer Mary Poppins to stay in the film or indeed book.
I prefer Usenet newbies to know how to behave politely before they start top-posting, over-quoting etc.

On boards.ie you're expected to read the board charters and behave appropriately - why should Usenet be any different?

As someone who has had to put up with all sorts of unsnipped and misformatted messages for years on newsgroups, I sure as hell invite everyone to advise newbies on netiquette.

(And I second the recommendation about OE-Quotefix for anyone who won't install a real newsreader. OE-Quotefix will make your own mail-reading and newsreading experience much more pleasant, and is worth it for that alone, even if you, like Dub45, don't give a ****e for anyone enjoyment of newsgroups).

If your on IOLbb plus you should only get theoretical max 64kB/sec

    IE 512kb / 8 = 64kB

But you will never get this.

The max you get from IOLBB is 50-55K down...i have never once seen a constant downstream of more then this.

Sure it starts fast, three figures and drops pretty quickly and settle around the 52-54K range.

But nobody is getting 65K down from any 512Kbps package, even if you lived in the exchange and connect directly you won't see it.

If you've got 1MB then 65K down is poor, you should see 100-105K.

Ah it's great I've been getting 120k all day for the last few weeks.

    /me loves local wireless thingy.

What package are you on?, 120K down seems too much for 1MB line.

According to esat iol bb+ will actually connect at 600kbs during times of low contention. It's in a recent post somewhere but i have to get back to finding the barrel of ambrosia that's in the hanger in deus ex!

It's porkies, Eircom have it set at the exchange level to 512Kbps...it won't go any faster then this. Someone at Esat is fibbing. And when you factor in overheads the downstream will never come close to the 64K down.

I'd LOVE 600K down, broadband in Ireland sucks for speeds...it's too expensive for a 1MB line.

In the UK they enjoy a home package that offers 1MB/256K for home users at a very reasonable price.

So why can't we have this here???

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭Mutant_Fruit

I have reached averages of 61.7kb/sec downloading on my connection. With overheads, the closest you could expect to possibly get is 62kb/sec out of the theoretical max of 64kb/sec. 60-61 is more realistic though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 507 ✭✭✭Roller Toaster

But you're on wireless....the rules are completely different...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭Mutant_Fruit

tcp/ip overheads are tcp/ip overheads, i wouldn't think it would make the slightest bit of difference whether my ethernet card shunts the data through an antenne, or your ethernet card shunts the data through a modem. Its still internet traffic in TCP/IP format. Therefore the same overheads will apply.

    Correct me if i'm wrong.

Look at the complaints they get when they can only deliver 512 to a fraction of the "audience" - imagine the howls of abuse they'd get if they were offering 1MB at a price that people could afford, but to even less people than can currently get 512.

Yeah okay I get that but I was referring to the fact that you were saying that you get 61k a sec which is a little confusing for anyone who doesn't know that you're on wireless. It's like a digiweb customer bitching in a "bad utv pings" thread because they're getting pings in the 1000s :)

Roller Toaster: I know what you mean, but when i saw this i just had to add my comment
And when you factor in overheads the downstream will never come close to the 64K down.

No matter what connection you are on, you can expect to achieve a max of 61kb/sec downstream. Which is quite close to the theoretical max. Of course, it does depend completely on the ISP, and how much bandiwdth is currently available, so you might not achieve that...

Well back on topic...I get around 57k regularly which I'm very happy with. I've never gotten above that though.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 21,634 ✭✭✭✭Richard Dower

I guess then it depends on the location, server and other factors. I saw 55K down tonite for a patch i downloaded. But...even when i was living really close to the exchange i never saw 60K+ on any downloads on any site.
