Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hacking attempts

Hey I got my broadband in about a week ago and last night while I was asleep I think someone tried to access my computer. Have Norton installed so the firewall blocked it luckily enough.

    Gave me this message:

A computer with the I.P. address 220.255.241.119 sent information that is characteristic of the MS_SQL_BlankPassword_Access Attack.

    I traced it to Singapore.

How often do other people get hack attempts and can anyone tell me what exactly was that attack?

This attack was basicly just someone hoping you had MS SQL Server or the MS Data Engine (MSDE) installed and that you never set the default password. I'm pretty sure this is quite a common type of attack.

If you do have MS SQL server installed, then make sure you have the latest service packs and do NOT leave the 'sa' account password blank. If you do those then you shouldn't have to worry.

More info on this type of attack is here: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/nis_ids/sigs/MS_SQL_BlankPassword_Access.html

If you are going to be leaving your PC on and connected, as most of us do for the first while after getting bb, you should either get used to seeing these messages or else configure Norton so it doesn't brag about every little thing it protects you from.

I installed ZoneAlarm when I was on dial up and these type of messages started to make me paranoid. To the extent that I would do a whois on the IP and send a mail to the ISP demanding that they be punished. Then I chilled and figured that the IP I was seeing was probably just some other poor sap whose PC was being used as a relay. As my PC wasn't on the whole time and my IP kept changing I just uninstalled it and kept my AV up to date. With BB I wouldn't be without a fully updated Norton installation though.

In summary: Get used to it.

Not a brilliant idea. It also carries a 3 month tariff. And that's if you don't make any changes/deletions.
If you do make changes, look up S.2 Criminal Damage Act '91. It's up to 10 years. It hardly seems worth it.
